The first time I read this book I wasn't mentally prepared to let go of the FMC/MMC the ACOTAR series followed most closely so far. When I re-read this book I realised that was super short-sighted of me because this book is incredible. It is emotional, inspiring, empowering, a story of friendship and personal growth and forgiveness. The spice and romantic plot is also 10/10. I love this book!!!!!!

for being the 4th book in a series, switching to making nesta and cassian the protagonists/narrators was a great move. it made the story feel fresh and interesting, as it was starting to get a bit stale with feyre and rhys. though that in itself is impressive of the author, in that she successfully pivoted from having her heroine be the star of the series to being a slightly boring, almost fussy pregnant woman. shifting to nesta opened up a lot of doors.

all the sex scenes were v fun, and i also loved the friendship between nesta, emerie and gwyn. per usual, she could have used a better editor, it was all a bit longer than it needed to be. but i did quite enjoy it. the training scenes, the way the house opened up/befriended nesta, the 10,000 stairs to the bottom that she kept going back to, the fun meta nod to the romance novels she and her friends loved to share/discuss, cassian learning how to be a courtier, nesta fighting alchy and other demons within while also still fighting external demons; it all came together pretty nicely.

i felt like the author kept hinting at something between azriel and elain, and def made it clear that lucien and elain were not jiving as mates, but that never really went anywhere. i think this is the last in the series, but it almost felt as if she was leaving the door open for another book from elain's POV.

nesta's seemingly almost unending powers was a tiny bit of a cheap shot, but i was mostly ok with it. though i suppose instead of offering to "give them all back" to save feyre/rhys/baby nyx, it might have been more interesting to see her lean into them and the trove and maybe try to become the ruler of the worlds; the way ppl feared she could. i get that she didn't want that, and that after finally admitting cass was her mate she just wanted to be with him and probs eventually have his kids, but it still could have been pretty interesting. while i do love a happy ending, this one was almost too perfect. saving her fam, and still having some power left for herself, it was all just super tidy at the end. even with some big bads still out there.

I cried in the acknowledgements, so...

Really I just always love the way SJM writes characters, with their arcs and relationships and interactions. There was a lot about this book that appealed to my personal tastes for tropes and plot lines, so not everyone will feel the same. Also the *spice* was an entire other level of cringey, but we read on in spite of it.

I know a lot of people really like this book - I just can't stand Nesta...shes mean, immature and petty and is not a character I'm interested in reading about
