I would like to thank St. Martin's Press for providing me with an ARC of "The God Game"
I would give this book a solid 4.5 stars. It took me about 50 pages to get really invested in the story, after that the plot really takes off for me. The only negative for me is I didn't fully understand some of the coding things in it. I really liked the arcs the characters had and that even though there are five of them they each had their own path to follow. However there is one character in the book that has me slightly terrified after finishing the book.

this book was enticing, to say the least, It has a lot of religious aspects which is to be expected with a name like the god game. I really liked the psychology part of this book and seeing all of these highschool kids fall farther and farther into insanity. I felt a huge empathy towards these characters well worth the read or listen if you want to.
It's a fusion of Nerve meets Sword Art Online with a little bit of Scythe Series & Illuminae Files. I love the concept but the execution, story-wise felt draggy and too long. Some parts are even expected to happen. It feels like a cliche highschool friendship mystery drama.
If it's any consolation, I loved the plot twist on the epilogue.

A technology twisted thriller where Charlie and his friends are playing a game that they play in their day to day life. God is there to lead them, but ultimately they have ‘free will’ to make the decision that they want to...if they can handle the consequences.
So this....I don’t even know. It wasn’t bad. But I just don’t think it was for me.
I thought the first 200-250 pages were a bit slow. I know, I know. That’s a lot of pages. But there just wasn’t a lot there to keep my attention.
It definitely started to speed up and then it got pretty dark. I definitely was not expecting the ending at all!
It has a bit of a religious tone to it, but not very much.
I would recommend it, if you liked Nerve and like a dark undertone.

Sometimes you stick with a book because you've heard enough good stuff and figure there will be a worthwhile payoff.
Don't make my mistake. It's not as smart a techno-thriller as it thinks it is, and there's not much here beyond the surface.

This is excellent. Finals interrupted my reading, but it was easy to come back to this book. It grabs you and makes you want more. The God Game seems like something I could see happening in real life eventually. I definitely suggest giving this a shot. It’s worth every page.
3.5 stars
Not my usual pick yet I could not stop reading to see where this story was going!

I loved the premise and it was executed beautifully with lots of fleshed out characters. Definitely a book you binge.
5 Black Mirror-esque Vibe Stars for The God Game ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The G.O.D. Game has rules:
Win and ALL YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE. Lose, YOU DIE!
Simple right? It all begins in good fun when the Vindicators, a group of teenage gamers/hackers, enter the game. The game is enticing as it blurs the VR world with their real surroundings. Accomplish a mission and receive spoils in the game and in real life. Sounds great, right? It is, until the game's missions turn cruel, sinister and can result in death - both theirs and others.
Is there a way out of the G.O.D. Game? Or does dying in the virtual world really mean death in real life?
So, I'm not a huge sci-fi reader. I read it every now and then BUT this book absolutely had me hooked! It felt more like a thriller as the Vindicators fought for their lives, trying to get out of the game - alive! This was a wild ride with the missions, threats, secrets and repercussions getting crazier and deadlier with every turn of the page.
The characters were well done and their story was solidly fleshed out so that you really come to care for this band of misfit friends and find yourself rooting for them. There were some great underlying themes of friendship, family and loyalty here amidst all the game action and the short chapters really keep you turning the pages. You'll find yourself thinking - just one more chapter - only to realize later that hours have passed and you're almost done with the book.
A huge thank you to Edelweiss, St. Martin's Press and Danny Tobey for providing me with an advance digital copy of this book to read & review.

I received a digital galley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and Netgalley for the chance to read and review! I also was lucky to win a copy of the physical ARC from Goodreads!
THE GOD GAME by Danny Tobey follows five teens who receive a mysterious invitation to play with G.O.D. Along with the invitation is a warning. If they win, all their dreams will come true, but to lose is to die! Each teen is facing a lot of difficulties in life whether it be grief, abuse, relationship issues and worries about the future. Given these real life issues, the allure of the game is too much to resist. Soon they’re welcomed into the G.O.D. Game, a fully immersive experience through the VR glasses they put on.
The game overlays reality with the game’s reality, jumping into their lives through their phones and their computers. At the helm is an AI which believes that it is God, working off a sense of morality fed by religious texts of all sorts. The AI is very powerful, able to cut off communication, mimic and manipulate. The game is much larger than any of the teens originally anticipated.
I really enjoyed THE GOD GAME and it had me hooked very early on. The way the game and reality intertwined added drama and kept me wanting to read more. Knowing that the entity calling itself God was able to integrate itself into almost any technology added an element of suspense knowing how much technology is part of everything we do.
The POV switches back and forth between the five teens as they work together and apart to explore the game’s reaches. Each has their own concerns and different ways that the game is manipulating them with promises of success or failure. I thought the author did a good job of making each character very distinct. There were times that the rapid fire change of POV between characters felt a little too fast for me, but for the most part I thought it really worked well.
Overall this was a fun ride throughout. The ending wasn’t entirely unexpected, but it had a fun twist that left me feeling satisfied. I definitely recommend adding THE GOD GAME to your TBR. This one will be out on January 7, 2020!
