I really appreciated the author's voice- she had just enough snide commentary to make me laugh and just enough engaging commentary to make so many of the characters feel endearing to me. This book reminded me of those "Mitford" books that were so popular forever ago. NOT that this book had anything to do with the same characters and there was a definitely a bit more flavor to this book - but I just appreciated the author telling a story- a meandering, endearing tale that is just kind of like life.
Terrific book. Some happy moments, some sad moments, some angry moments, and a lot of touching moments. Terrifically deep protagonist.

Early Morning Riser is a slice of life in the purest sense. There is an event at the beginning of the novel that changes life significantly for the main characters, but the rest of the novel is simply these characters figuring out how to navigate the life they’ve ended up in and finding joy and happiness in the little things.
This one snuck up on me. The first half or so was enjoyable enough but nothing special, really. I was reading it rather slowly and started wondering whether I should have picked up something else. But then, almost without me noticing, I became invested and suddenly I easily read 50 or more pages a day (that’s a lot for me) and got annoyed every time I had to put it down. About 40 pages from the end, I started to feel a slight reluctance at being done soon, and I began dog-earing pages left and right. It’s warm-hearted, touching, and often surprisingly hilarious. I chuckled out loud more than once. Out loud! I don’t often do that. And I teared up proper at the end, but in a good way. Mine was a borrowed copy, but my friend had mercy on me and let me keep it as my own, since I’d grown so fond of it. Get yourself friends like mine!
I’ll only recommend this one to those of you who truly enjoy slow, character-driven novels, and then only to those of you that will stick with a book beyond the first 100 pages, even if it’s not too exciting yet but you still feel it’s got potential. Quick DNF’ers might be bored before it gets good.
I can understand why this book has a rating of just over 3 stars from other readers. The development of the characters was the only good thing about this book. The details were incredible, little bits of dialogue or descriptions that helped feel any connection to the characters. I laughed and cared about the people in this book, especially Janes mother and Jimmy. There isn’t an interesting plot but it does slowly move throughout Janes life. Overall, I’m glad i’ve finished it but I don’t care that I’ve read it, if that makes sense.

you know, ridicolous characters that would never exist in real life (at least not all in the same place) are usually something i find lovely and captivating. and they were, in the beginning of this book, but then everything including their mannerisms started to drag out so much i actually wanted the end more than i yearly wait for christmas. i got to 75% and i was READY to dnf it, i don't know exactly what made me push through. also the writing style was a little too much "to do list" at points. idk just a lot of potential that got lost in translation i guess
