Another book that is fine. I liked it, didn't love it. Still searching for the great book of 2021.

This started slow for me, and I couldn’t really tell how it was going to end. Then, I really started to enjoy it around the last two chapters when the following happened: 1) I realized I am just as judge-y as the main character, and 2) the main character had some personal growth. We love a good character arc. I would recommend this to my judgi-est friend.

I wish I could love this book. The cover and the way the preview was written it sounded like a beautiful story of a small town banding together over a tragic event. While something unexpected does end up happening, you sort of saw it coming and it was disappointing. The best part of this book was the last 60 pages and not just because it was the end of the book. I felt like the last section of the book (it didn’t have chapters but rather was separated by different years the book took place) was starting to make sense of what you were reading but I didn’t like that we had to wait so long for it to get good.

I thought this book was enjoyable. I liked following Jane over the course of 17 years to see about the life she made for herself in Boyne City, MI. I loved the discussions that came to mind about family. This book illustrated that family is so much more than blood. I also liked the how Jane, Duncan, and the people they surrounded themselves with were able to overcome hard things and come out stronger. The past doesn't have to define who you are. That being said, this book still left me wanting more. I wanted more joy and happiness. I wanted to feel that the characters hadn't just settled for the life they were living.
