This book was so weird...but I kind of loved it? Is the main character annoying? Oh yeah. But all of her pop culture references were oddly great and when Hall came along I honestly laughed out loud multiple times because everything was so ridiculous. It has magic in it so once you accept that literally none of these things can happen it really grows on you and I ended up really loving this book. If you unsure in the beginning I say just keep going because it'll surprise you.

3.5 stars. Don’t be fooled by the simple cover, this book is absolutely bonkers. It’s definitely not your typical Christmas romance book. Wasn’t keen at the start, but by the end I really warmed up to it

This might sound cheesy, but Sarah Hogle just gets me when it comes to writing romances that I will enjoy. This was silly and goofy, even borderline chaotic, but at the same time it was heartwarming and heart-wrenching. Never thought I'd find my perfect holiday romance book in April, but I'm not complaining.

⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ 3.5 stars! The writing style is beautiful and I adore the authors work, however this book was really hard to get through. I made it to the end and the character and romance development was great but, i found myself constantly putting this down to read something else or do something else because of how bored I was or tired of reading somethings. The quirkiness was good and unique but alot. Overall it was okay!

This was weird, but good weird. The narrator added a lot of humor to the audiobook

absurdist emily henry has created a hot holiday spirit (in the bright-eyed optimistic style of buddy the elf) with deep fixations on lacey chabert, cracker barrel, and pie baking, whom i am, consequently, in love with
sarah hogle makes me laugh harder than prob any other romance author. this is the stupidest concept, but it’s executed wonderfully. made me go all misty eyed and hopeful ! how dare !

“his mother died six years before he was born, taken by the whales”
“if i can transport niall horan to a random taco bell in chicago, what else can i do?”
“i really love the name monica”
“montgomery! juneau! phoenix! little rock! sacramento! denver! hartford!”
“is dracula in the public domain?”
“i confess, i developed an addiction to getting struck by lightning”
“let’s talk about mallard ducks!”
“Beware, the Veil Is Thin Tonight.”
“Josh Groban’s tied up in the bathtub”

So Bettie Hughes plays Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ backwards, on vinyl.
This conjures the living personification of the Spirit of Christmas, who is a handsome, magical man that smells good 24/7 (obvs!).
Cue this completely unhinged, chaotic romance !

Will there ever be a Sarah Hogle book I don’t adore? Maybe. Probably. But this one isn’t it.
Of course, I’m biased for many reasons. I love winter (though the Bay Area doesn’t get much of one). I believe in a full holiday season from the end of November through the New Year. (My season actually the end of October, if I’m honest.)
Finally - and as already mentioned - this is a story by Sarah Hogle. Each book of hers has been such a sweet surprise. The only thing I know going into any of them is that there’s going to be a happy ending. Everything else is just excellent storytelling. Her versatility as a writer impresses the hell out of me every single time.
Hogle worship aside - Just Like Magic doesn’t even try to be realistic. It’s wildly fantastical. Though the story tries to convince you that there are rules, truly there are none. Certainly there are none that a reader can predict. And that’s okay. You just have to sit back and savor it.
