I noticed I've rated this book, I'll be honest, I don't remember reading it. I'll have to add this to my reread pile and update when I've given it another shot.
My son read this in 4th grade literature class last year, and I heard bits and pieces of the story from him. It piqued my interest and had me wondering what on earth did the school have them reading. When I passed it on the library shelf recently, I decided I needed to read it myself. Read it in a few hours and enjoyed the imagery and the tale of bravery and perseverance for what you believe in.
There are some dark parts (no pun intended) in the dungeon and the story of Miggery Sow who was sold by her father as a slave and beaten routinely about the head. These were perhaps a bit graphic for a children's story, but nonetheless, I enjoyed the tale.

Why is Despereaux the title character? He's easily the least interesting one in the book.
Petition to rename it The Tale of Miggery Sow!

My very favorite book growing up. When I came across it at Half Priced Books a few months ago, I just had to get it & reread it for old times sake. And I’m so glad I did, because I appreciate the story even more now that I can see it through the eyes of an adult. I just love this book.
