I wasn't thrilled with it. I found it hard to become emotionally involved, and every time I thought something exciting was going to happen, it turned out to be somewhat anticlimactic. But I read it out loud to my kids, and they enjoyed it. And it is a kids' book. So it accomplished it's goal.
I thought this might be a cute book to read but I was wrong. It was a pretty easy and short read but the writing wasn't all that good and it was a bit creepy; some parts of the book made me wonder if it was even a children story at all. Some might think that a book about mouse, rats, and princess is eerie before even reading it but the plot sucked me in and I thought it was nothing like I have ever read before, however I wished I was one of those people who thought the book was weird and put it down. You can give it a try and read it yourself but I'm pretty sure I wont be read it again.
4-4.5
This is one of the rare cases where I did like the version of the story that the movie told. This, however, was a lovely story filled with light, darkness, forgiveness, love, mice, rats, imperfect people trying to do their best, and soup.

Quick read, simple story, but very touching. Beautiful messages of forgiveness, redemption, friendship, the value of each individual, the importance of kindness. I thought Ms. DiCamillo did an amazing job of characterization with few words, and I loved the constant imagery of light vs. dark.

Of all the cute, this-is-probably-for-kids book I've read, Depseraux is by far my favorite! It catches you, and even though it's a mouse, and the situation is one of the most unrealistic ones ever, like every other fairytale, it's touching and you can relate (not calling anyone a rat here!). If you're looking for some serious literature, then no, you shouldn't read this. But if ýou're looking for something sweet that maybe your kids or cousins might like just as much as you, then this is perfect.
