This one has been taunting me ever since I rented the movie and watched it with my daughter.
The book, while wholly different to the movie (what with its different characters and alteration of side-plots), was equally as enjoyable. Enough for me to knock it off in a few hours, all the while convincing myself that I would read “just one more chapter”, after all, I kind of knew the ending. 270 pages later, and I’m putting a fully-read story back on the shelf.
I’d recommend this to anyone who’d like a quick, refreshing trip down a path with a lovely-written story about a Mouse, a Princess, Some Soup and a Spool of Thread.
A book I truly could not put down and can't wait to share with my daughter.

A creative and intersting book, it kept me reading until I finished. However, it was also the most depressing children's book I have ever read. Personally, I don't think the movie will do it justice.

Rhiannon and I started this book. I was hoping to finish it before Ireland, but I just might have to read it to her via Skype. So far, I love it. DiCamillo's style is beautiful and reads like a poetic fairy tale. We are currently at the part where Despereaux falls in love with Princess Pea. I actually gasped when I read it (kudos to DiCamillo to writing the unexpected) and looked at Rhiannon. She was all eyes and wonderment. "Can you believe it? A mouse in love with Princess Pea?" and Rhiannon responded with, "Read one more part." This is her first big girl book and she was not too crazy about it, but the story and the language won her over. We'll see where it goes...but, if my reading out loud (and my terrible French impersonations) have not bored her yet, I think that's a mark of a good book.
