I love this book. I read it when I was a kid but didn’t really remember much so I wanted to reread it. It’s so cute and I just love the story.

Struggling to finish this, tabling it for now. Or forever.
My absolute favorite book in elementary school. I read this over and over and over again. It’s such a beautiful story with beautiful writing. Dicamillo was hands down the most influential author of my childhood
Cute story, though definitely targeted for younger children as it was a bit twee - but not in a bad way. It had some nice little lessons about friendship and bravery and whatnot, and was done well.
I didn't even mind the self-aware "dear reader" comments, though I usually do. In this instance it felt more like the author was taking the reader into her confidence as opposed to 'talking down' to them, which is often comes across as. I can't really explain what it was, in specific, which makes the difference - something about the tone, I suppose.
Or it could just be me being fickle and ineffable. *shrugs*

This is my first DiCamillo book. I like her writing style and the underlying morals that are woven throughout. Forgiveness seems to be the biggest one. Tinged with sadness and some betrayal and cruelty which isn't what I remember reading in my childhood. I read more mysteries as a child and though there were crimes, I feel there wasn't as much cruelty. I feel like I should start previewing books before my kids read them.

Cute, quick read that I would love to share with my little girl in a few years. :)
