This story was really adorable. I remember watching the movie and wanting to read the book. They are equally adorable.
Maybe I was looking for something a little more uplifting in these COVID times. I was definitely captivated! I really like the authors flow. I picked this up for work, I can’t remember if I ever read it as a child but I remember it being very popular.
I really loved the first two “books” in this novel. (the story is split up into four books in one). All of my favorite scenes took place in the first part of the book, I especially love the relationship between the mouse and princess. Despereaux overall from dialogue to description is just simply precious.
They lost me for the second half / the last two books. The author is very direct throughout, no sugar coating here, but it almost bordered obsession with cruelty at times. It brought me to feeling uncomfortable, and not in a good way, with some of the ways Miggery Sow was described. While I understand it’s part of her story arc, the cruelty was too heavy handed for me.

Seriously cute young adult novel. It is totally deserving of all of the awards it's won.
I love, love, love the narrative voice for this story. I love that it's an intimate reading experience, and that the narrator encourages the reader to think about words and their meanings in a way that doesn't feel didactic at all. The story itself is also fantastic. Despereaux is a great hero and I like that we get glimpses into the other characters' lives as well, so that even the "bad guys" are not entirely evil. It's a beautiful story.
I first fell in love with DiCamillo for Because of Winn-Dixie and I keep falling in love the more I read. She's so diverse, but she is one of the few authors who can do that well--there's never any less truth and delight to any of her stories, however wildly different they are.

read this one with lilly mae this summer and it was as magical and incredible as i remembered. such a special and beautiful book full of light ✨
A beautiful touching story about a mouse who aspires to rescue a princess. The narration often breaks the forth wall and raises thoughtful questions to engage the young reader.
Read as a read aloud with my six-year-old. Some of the language she was unfamiliar with, but loved the story. A good counter point to the Disney princess stories she loves so much.
A fun and sweet adventure story about an unlikely mouse hero saving a princess. The narration style is fun for young readers with the mixed narrative voices (plot predominantly in 3rd person with regular second-person “dear Reader” reflections). Some abuse content as one character regularly receives “clouts” to the head for misbehaving. Great vocabulary! This book would be great for an advanced reader (Grade 3/4) that reads above their level but isn’t ready for content that is above their maturity.
