2.5 stars. I wanted to love this book because I really like lots of Kate DiCamillo's other writing...but...this was a strange read. It didn't feel like either a children's or adult's book; and I didn't find it memorable enough to be a classic. The back and forth in chronology and all the asides to the reader really jarred me out of the story. And thematically, it felt a little heavy handed. That said, I know lots of people love this book, so maybe I'm just missing something. I'd recommend Because of Winn Dixie and/or Raymie Nightingale as much better Kate DiCamillo reads instead.
I had actually never read this before my son asked me to read it aloud. Charming, sweet, only slightly bothersome in its treatment of Mig. One of those ones that's best not to overthink.

One of my favorite childhood books. Some say the themes are dark but the entire point of the book is how kindness, forgiveness, love and empathy will always be important no matter how dark life gets.
