This duology was fine. Probably good for a scary/horror book. I was invested in the characters, and it created nice spooky imagery, good for a Halloween-season read.

This is the second book of this little short two series book, and while I did love this book very much especially the time it was told in and characters.. I feel like it was almost unnecessary to have this book.
But don't make what I just said discourage you from reading this, for some reason this era that she wrote the book in makes my heart happy by the manners and love Joseph and Sophie share.
I also like how the all her books scary monsters are all a little bit different such as the Grimlock. It was almost like a supernatural folk tale and I loved it!

This should not have been a duology.
I normally enjoy Darcy Coates books for what they are, and knew what I was getting myself into with the first book. Instalove annoyes me in general, and especially when she instantly was head over heels and then some in love with someone who she didnt really know, kept vital secrets from her, didnt give her the info she needed to stay safe, and mainly married her as a sacrifice to a demonic entity. But I got through, and the vibes were creepy enough to enjoy.
But then came this book. When they early on pointed out that from marrying him, traveling to his estate, surviving his estate, traveling back to the city she came from and staying with her parents, it had only beed three weeks. I just stopped reading and had to stare into the wall for a bit. I should have dnf'ed it at that point. But I kept going and was whacked in the head with them once again not communicating for shit, since that worked out so well in the last book, and he is a broody AH to "protect" her, and she is so strong and independent that she willingly continuously risks her life to protect this man no matter how he treats her in hopes that he loves her a fraction of how much she gushes over loving him. Its been three weeks.
I normally enjoy Coat's books for what they are. Quick and creepy tales that you can enjoy easily enough if you dont look too hard at them, and I would have done so with this one as well, if it had been a stand alone. The second book cut the harness from which I suspend my disbelief from.
