I really enjoyed all the folklore mixed in! At times, I was somewhat confused about what was actually happening versus folktale. The imagery was great! I felt really immersed when I was reading the audiobook.

took me an obscene 11 months to read, but god, this was quite a lovely one. very atmospheric, very vivid. beautiful setting, a lot of care for detail, rich writing, just delicious. katherine arden spins such a beautiful and frightful and hopeful tale. i really liked vasya as a protagonist, and she truly has such a magnetism to her that she bends the entire world to her will, and through her will. the contrast of the old way - the tradition, the superstition, the creatures people worshipped, and the new way - the christian faith, the way they clash and intertwine and tangle, and their relation to fear and trust, the transition from a contractual, transactional type of worshipping household and nature spirits out of gratitude and respect and peaceful coexistence of human and nature, to an aggressive, fearful worshipping of a christian God, on your knees and with your head down in humility, a worshipping that breeds fear and feeds with fear - all of that i think was executed masterfully.
