I had no idea what to expect from this book. I had heard so much about it and I know it's a beloved story for many. The Bear and the Nightingale follows Vasilisa and her family as they navigate life in the Russian winter forest. (This is a completely understated summary. If I tried to explain everything, it would take up this entire post.)

I listened to this book on audio and I'm so glad I did. The narrator added a little extra something to the story and really brought it to life. I had a hard time breaking away each time I had other things to do. This is a fairytale type story with Russian folklore weaved into the world building. The author went into depth with each character. This provided a real sense of who they were resulting in an easy emotional attachment. (This rarely ever happens for me in stories.) This story is overall wholesome and will pierce right to the heart. If you love fantasy and fairytales, you need to give this story some of your time. You won't regret it.

Overall, I personally gave this story 4 stars. There were some parts that drug a little for me and pulled me from the story because I was like "get to the point." Also, I'm not sure if I will continue with the series or not. I would probably pick this up next winter because I don't feel a need to pick it up again anytime soon.

starts slow but quite good by the end

Took me a while to really connect with this story and the characters, but the last 100 or so pages massively saved it for me.
