Wonderfully written fairy tale for adults. Strong nature-centric folklore and "magic" themes. Takes you to another world. Couldn't put it down.

Eine märchenhafte Erzählung voller Folklore und Atmosphäre. Die Sprache von Katherine Arden ist wundervoll und hat mich mit ihrem Erzählstil begeistert. Zeitweise waren es sehr viele Details an Stellen, wo ich sie nicht für nötig gehalten und zu wenig Fokus, wo ich es mir gewünscht hätte. So hat sich der Anfang etwas gezogen, aber circa nach dem ersten Drittel hat es sich sehr schnell weggelesen und das Ende kam mir dann sehr abrupt vor. Unterm Strich ist das aber eine Frage von Prioritätensetzung der Autorin und persönlicher Präferenz und kein schwerer Mangel des Buches. Würde ich auch Lesenden ans Herz legen, die sonst nicht im Fantasybereich unterwegs sind, da man sich nicht in einer voll ausgearbeiteten Fantasywelt bewegt sondern in einem verschneiten alt-russischen Hinterland wo Geschichten doch ein bisschen mehr als nur Erzählungen sind.

This was a wonderful, magical, Russian winter faery tale. 4.5 star.
Reading this over the holidays was ideal to help set the mood. If I read this in summer it may not have had the same effect on me. Overall I simply enjoyed this and was thoroughly entranced by the narrative. Found the pacing nice and the tale engaging. Beautiful descriptions without going over the top, prompting the dreaded skimming when descriptive passages become too much. I loved this one. I read it at the right time. Look forward to finding the next in the series.

A bit out of my normal genre, but I really liked it. It took a while to get into it, maybe the first 30% or so, but it was all world building, so not awful, just a bit slow. An intruiging Russian folk tale I'd definitely recommend!
