Farida was a normal young girl, a loving family, friends and getting a good education in Northern Iraq. When her father taught her how to use a gun, she never thought she'd need it. Little did she know ISIS were advancing and before long they would take her town as well as her and her friends.
Books are starting to come through of that it is like being held by ISIS and Farida's story is both heartbreaking and an eye opener into what some of these young women go through. This is not an easy read at all, but it is an important one. There is so much that as a wider world we don't know, see or understand. It was an honour to read her story.
The one thing that comes through, again and again, is the strength that Frida has throughout the horrors of being held by ISIS. She fights in every way that she can against the men that hold her physically, mentally and in her faith. It's incredible how despite everything that she goes through she keeps true to her faith no matter what.
I'm not able to say that I enjoyed the book because that seemed wrong. I appreciated it. I felt glad to have to read Fatima's story and I have to recommend it to everyone. I would have liked to have heard more about her life after she escaped and how she's doing now, but I understand why she didn't.
I gave this a well deserved 4 stars ****.

I read again in horror about the atrocities of IS against the Yazidis, a minority in Iraq.
What I liked very much was that Farida Khalaf knows very well how to touch the division between the views of a group of people who have radicalized and hide behind Islam and the actual religion Islam.
It makes me sad that these atrocities are still happening. I therefore think this is a subject for which attention should never be lost!

Vol afschuw las ik opnieuw over de wandaden van IS tegenover de Yezidi's, een minderheid in Irak.
Wat ik heel mooi vond was dat Farida Khalaf heel goed de scheiding weet te raken tussen de opvattingen van een groep mensen die zich geradicaliseerd hebben en zich verschuilt achter de islam en de daadwerkelijke religie Islam.
Het maakt me verdrietig dat deze gruweldaden nog altijd plaatsvinden. Ik vind dit daarmee een onderwerp waarvoor de aandacht nooit mag verslappen!

I got this book during the Audible two for one credit sale, so I was doubly pleased with this book. I have read several books about terrorism and religious extremism in the middle east, but I have not read much about ISIS as an entity. I cannot imagine being a female in this climate. The oppression is unreal, the abuse is unreal. This particular girl had her town invaded by ISIS, resulting her being sold into sex slavery. Her story is heart breaking, but the resilience and fact that she found a way out of that negative situation and was able to share her story and raise awareness of what was really going on was amazing. I enjoyed this book.

Prva knjiga pročitana. Za prvi zadatak – Tamna naslovnica – odabrala sam knjigu Djevojka koja je pobijedila ISIS.
Knjiga je biografija mlade djevojke Faride (to joj nije pravo ime) koja je s obitelji živjela u Sjevernom Iraku kad su njenu regiju napali ISIL-ovci te ju zajedno sa svim ostalim djevojkama prodali u roblje. Farida priča o svim strahotama koje je doživjela tijekom svog boravka u različitim zatvorima u Islamskoj državi.
Priča je zaista šokantna i potresna i bio me je strah kad sam ju uzela u ruke koliko će ta njena ispovijest zapravo biti teška. Međutim, nije me pogodila u žicu. Imala sam dojam kao da je više dokumentaristički napisana, preko svih događaja se prelazilo dosta brzo. Nedostajale su mi žestoke emocije koje bi trebale pratiti takvu strašnu priču. Stvarnije mi je djelovala recimo Hosseinijeva knjiga Tisuću žarkih sunaca od ove. Nekako sam ipak od ove očekivala više.

✴️ Am primit cartea cadou pe la începutul anului însă nu am avut curaj să o citesc, până acum, știind ce mă așteaptă. Știam că este o lectura cu o încărcătură emoțională, motiv pentru care am plâns de multe ori pe parcursul ei.
✴️ Foarte multe persoane mi-au recomandat această carte, și eu de asemenea o voi recomanda de acum! Oricine ar trebui să citească această carte.
✴️ Eu i-am acordat 5⭐ pentru că le merită din plin.
✴️ Farida însăși ne prezintă cea mai neagră perioadă a vieții sale. Acțiunea se desfășoară în anul 2014, ea fiind în ultimul an de liceu, visând să devină profesoară de matematică după ce profesorul ei le dă un test unde doar ea reușește să aibă un punctaj mare, 99 de procente.
✴️ „Melek Taus este, după cum știi, îngerul sublim al Domnului. Este cea mai frumoasă dintre toate făpturile luminii, cea desăvârșită. Însă, din păcate, mulți musulmani cred tocmai contrariul.“ motiv pentru care gruparea teroristă numită „Dolat e Islamia fi Iraq va Syria“ – Statul Islamic în Irak și în Siria, pe scurt Daesh sau ISIS (cum este cunoscută în întreaga lume) începe să atace zone precum Samarra, Bakuba, Mosul, iar la puțin timp și Kocho, satul unde locuia Farida și familia sa.
✴️ Bărbații sunt urcați în camioane, duși pe câmp și măcelăriți. Femeile sunt luate captive, despărțite de familiile lor iar fete erau duse să fie vândute ca sclave în Siria, exact ca pe niște animale.
✴️ Povestea este una foarte dureroasă, având în vedere că sunt întâmplări din zilele noastre și cu siguranță, în momentul acesta zeci sau sute de fete sunt silite la o astfel de viață, dacă o poți numi așa.
✴️ Pe mine curajul Faridei m-a impresionat. A văzut dincolo de situație și a încercat să găsească o modalitate să supraviețuiască, chiar dacă în repetate rânduri a vrut să își ia viața.
✴️ Foarte multe persoane mi-au recomandat această carte, și eu de asemenea o voi recomanda de acum! Oricine ar trebui să citească această carte.
