Man, this is such an eye opener to what’s going on in the spiritual world. The thing I got out of it most was the power of prayer. What a privilege that God lets us partake in the happenings of this and the spiritual world. But we need to pray. PRAY PRAY PRAY! That’s what my thoughts are at the moment. So in the words of Hank: “Let’s pray.”

On the literary side of things, Peretti has a very distinct writing style. It’s entertaining, fast paced, and even though there are many characters it doesn’t get confusing because they all have distinct characteristics. This book keeps you on your toes. It’s interesting and thrilling. You want to know what happens next. Very very good.

Also I cried quite a few times. Mostly because of conviction to pray or because I was in awe of how God can work and does work.
slow-paced

I was a great read of angels and demons. Although, it did seem to drag in places the final climactic end was great!

I loved this book! It was interesting, had great character development and a good pace. Stories of good and evil, angels and demons are timeless.
adventurous inspiring mysterious medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Plot
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

Better than Left Behind but only marginally.
Like a CBS miniseries they allude to cussing and violence but keep it clean. If you know the intended audience you know what you’re in for, better or worse.
Of course a psychology teacher at a university is the bad guy. And all the evil is caused by demons possessing folks, releasing them from any accountability for their actions.
A bunch of feel good Christian hokum which would be charming if people didn’t use this series to confirm their own beliefs.

I devoured This Present Darkness, a novel of over 400 pages, in a few hours. Such is the skill of Frank Peretti and the intensity of his subject matter.

The little town of Ashton is under attack. No shots have been fired. No invading army is marching through the streets. An invisible battle is about to be fought, a battle between the Host of Heaven and the Hordes of Hell. Caught in the middle are two struggling souls. Pastor Hank Busche is trying to hold on to his faith and his church as division and hatred wear on both. Newspaper editor Marshall Hogan is confronting a dark conspiracy threatening his family, his friends, and his sanity. As they search for answers they come to realize there are those among the town's elite who will go to any lengths to silence them. Even more frightening, these citizens are in league with dark spiritual forces who would like nothing more than to destroy them mind, body, and soul. But these two men are not alone. Silent, unseen Heavenly warriors guard their every step, waiting for the time to fight back. When that time comes, little Ashton will never be the same.

Peretti is a wordsmith of the highest degree. His characters are real enough to be the neighbors from across the street. His plot pulls readers in and refuses to let them go until the last page has been turned. His descriptions of Heavenly and Hellish entities will have you looking over your shoulder for days, trying to catch a glimpse of kind, golden eyes or praying that wasn't a puff of sulfurous breath. With every sentence Peretti shows the darkest corners of evil and illuminates them with the brightest light of hope.

This Present Darkness is not only a classic of Christian fiction, it is a classic of fiction in general. I recommend it to anyone who wants a clearer picture of spiritual warfare, or who is simply searching for an intense, well-crafted thriller.
dark emotional slow-paced

I was pleasantly surprised by this one! I'm wanting to read my way through the PBS Great American Read list and this was one on there. I've not read much Christian fiction but the way this one was written didn't feel like a religious based book. Yes, there were call outs to religion but it was overall a great fantasy read.

this is a really awesome book. I highly reccommend it. It's about the spiritual warfare that is constantly going on around us but are unaware of.

My book [b:100 Christian Books That Changed the Century|1877828|100 Christian Books That Changed the Century|William J. Petersen|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1189637082s/1877828.jpg|1878825] has this listed and I found a copy at the library. Apparently, though there had been plenty of Christian fictyion published before this, most of it was historical romances, and so when this came it took the market by storm. Well, it spent a year doing nothing much but was then publicised by some pop singer (Amy Grant/a>) and became a best-seller. The genre of modern action novel was what did it, and this led the way for many new novels by many other authors.

Personally, I don't read Christian fiction anyway (or very, very rarely), and the first few pages didn't draw me in.
