5 Stars for Alexis Hall's story
5 Stars for Joe Jameson's narration.

This was a reread for me as I first read it when the ebook came out. However, I HIGHLY recommend listening to the audiobook. Joe Jameson does an incredible job of narrating and really brings all the characters to life. Loved it.

I REALLY wanted to like this book but alas, it just didn’t work for me. It felt majorly slow and not the good kind of slow. I felt little to no connection between the main characters and we spent way too much time with other characters that frankly did not matter. I would’ve liked to see more in depth dives into the growth of the relationship between Oliver and Luc and their relationships with their respective families. I know there’s another book after this one but I don’t feel very inclined to read it. I think I got the warm fuzzys once and it was doused in freezing cold water directly after. Everyone felt extremely one dimensional, like, everyone had one personality trait and that was it. (Not to mention for most of the book, Luc’s one personality trait is being a terrible person and it took a love interest to fix that which I am never a fan of). I could be being a bit critical and maybe it might’ve worked for me at another time but right now, it just didn’t.

There were some real laugh out loud moments for me in this book. I feel some parts just dragged more than necissary but overall enjoyed this read.

3.5 stars. Loved the love interest and the fake dating trope, but found the MC and writing style to be a little insufferable.

4.5 okay this was cute and I really enjoyed it. I really felt like this would have done better as dual pov, especially those last few chapters like seeing where Oliver’s head was at, im sad how quickly the ending happening, like I wanted a couple more chapters but with another book coming out I guess that makes up for it. I LOVED the friendship group and how everyone got along. Luc was the cutest, he deserved SO much! Him and Oliver were so mismatched it was kinda perfect! Really enjoyable read for me ❤️

My review of the book is HERE so I won't rehash that.

Joe Jameson is a new-to-me narrator, and I admit I wasn't too impressed when I listened to the Audible sample of Boyfriend Material, but I took a chance and used a credit on it, and I'm really glad I did. It's often the case that Audible samples are selected at random by computer and don't often provide a good account of the narrator's ability, and that's definitely the case here.

Joe Jameson does a terrific job all round; I wasn't sure about his Oliver voice to start with, but it grew on me, and his female voices are terrific. His portrayal of Luc's mum is brilliant, and his French-accented English is pitched just right, enough "Frenchness" without being over-exaggerated. Kudos to him for the more than decent Welsh accent (they're one of the hardest British accents to do!) and best of all, he 'gets' Luc really well bringing out the character's insecurities and strengths. Being British/English, his speech rhythms are perfectly natural and the wry humour is all there. If you're on the fence about whether to get this one or now, don't let the sample put you off - it's well worth the Audible credit.
