Really enjoyed. I always go with the underdog! Spensa for the win.

This book was good, but not amazing. A solid 3/5 stars. It is also solidly in the YA category. Definitely less complex than Sanderson's Stormlight Archive series. While I enjoyed this book, it didn't overwhelm me with greatness. The beginning was very slow, and it is the standard underdog/hero story. The ending was very interesting. I will continue reading this series to see how the characters progress.

Spensa is a 17 year old who is part of a human population that are shipwrecked and have been living on a ruined planet called Detritus for almost 70 years, where they are under constant attack by a mysterious 'alien' species called the Krell. Spensa has dreamt all her life about following her deceased father's footsteps and becoming a pilot. But all her chances of becoming one are constantly being barred because of her father being branded a coward for ejecting in the battle of Alta (or so we think).
This was such an enjoyable, captivating, and inspirational story. Although this story is set in a world that is facing a bleak and hopeless future, with so much unfairness and loss to go with it, there was never a dull moment. Spensa is an amazing and fun character that represents the best of humanity. The whole cast of characters (including M-bot and doomslug) are nothing short of brilliant, all of them inspire you to be more, to keep believing, to defy the odds. I loved the friendships and the character developments. The last 100 pages where an emotional roller-coaster ride for me. Nothing is what it seems in this book. I absolutely loved it!

I had a hard time getting into it at the beginning, but once I did, I finished the rest of this book quickly. Can't wait to see where this series goes from here! While the Reckoners could technically count as a sci-fi novel, it still heavily bordered on fantasy. It was interesting to see Sanderson write sci-fi that veered further from fantasy.

So I took this one slow as it was my first ever Sci-fi and my first Brandon Sanderson book ever. I wasn’t predicting this to be a 5 star at all at most 4 1/2 stars. But that ending blew me away and I wasn’t expecting that ending at all. I cannot wait for the next book. I highly recommend this book to anyone willing to read it.

I absolutely LOVED this book. The characters were intriguing, the character development and the way their relationships developed was so well written, the battle scenes had me on the edge of my seat, overall, 5 out of 5 stars. I HIGHLY recommend. I can't wait for the sequel!
