Wow. I think a nonfiction book might have a crack at the Newbery this year. I admit that I haven't read all the other early contenders, but this is by far the best thing I've read all year. Fleming's work in this book is masterful, alternating between the suspenseful moments and days following Earhart's planned arrival on Howland Island during the penultimate leg of her flight around the world with Earhart's childhood and life leading up to her disappearance. Like a lot of people, I thought I had a pretty good idea of who Amelia Earhart was, but Fleming reveals so much of the person that I didn't know. Fleming illustrates through personal letters, anecdotes from family members and acquaintances and the media of that age just how much Amelia saw herself as a brand and really cultivated a public image in order to finance her aviation adventures. I was also fascinated by her childhood and her parents' encouragement of Amelia and her sister's education and adventures. She was clearly an extraordinary and inspiring woman for any age, but particularly for the age in which she lived. An engaging, interesting, and often thrilling read. Don't miss this one.

A great book about a fascinating woman who knew how to live her life with flare as well as an adventurous spirit. I learned a lot about Amelia that I didn't know. Amelia was quite the forward-thinking person in her day. I had no idea she hand-crafted that wind-blown look to her hair. Or that she taught at a college where she was the only female that could get away with wearing pants. Or that she spent some time at a job working to help immigrants. She really did it all. She was not always an admirable person, I fear, but you have to admit she made a splash! And really, let's admit it, perfect people are usually less interesting to read about. Unless they are Jesus or Mother Theresa.

Amazing story. I would never have read this book had the Newbery group on Goodreads not picked it for their September read. SOOOO glad I ended up reading it. It is brilliantly done and had me hooked throughout. I'm thinking 5th grade and above would enjoy this one.

Solid biography, likes how she breaks up the timeline with the end scattered though. Would have like some "modern" theories for the disappearance.

This would be an interesting book to share with students. I think they would be interested with the recent announcement of what they have discovered about her death.

In this detailed history about Amelia Earhart, we learn about her life growing up, the details about her love affair with flying, and how she became the first woman to have such daring dreams of flying around the world, and how she became a legend in her death.

A fantastic read! I loved reading about this vivacious woman with dreams bigger than herself and her time. Learning about her past put together pieces about why and how she became the woman she was. I appreciated the history involved, and the honesty of her relationships with those around her, along with discovering the truth about her love life, and her desire to not only be successful, but also to be in the spotlight. The map of her last flight just made me love her so much more. A great non-fiction read for anyone who loves history and stories of empowering women.
