This is not my favorite novel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. However, as I've been re-reading the series I found myself appreciating Phury's story more than I did the first time I read the series. I think this is in part because I already know what's going to happen, at least up to The Thief ;). This particular book is also a great builder of the next arch in the series. This meant that the pacing was slower than some of the other books, and you had to wait a long while for the Phury to realize he actually loved and was bonding with someone other than Bella, but I appreciate all the detail that went into preparing me as a reader for the next stories. It still isn't my favorite novel in the series, but I appreciate it much more than I did the first time I read these books.

I think I skimmed this one even worse than the Butch and Bland Blondie story from earlier in the series. Again, it may be the meds so I'm not one-starring this book but I couldn't get into it at all. I don't even know how the two characters hooked up. I did read the end it and was very cute and endearing and it made me smile (everyone learning daily living activities).

Phury's story is so beautiful and inspiring, and Ward handled it with her usual grace and sass. The characters keep getting better, the world bigger, the story deeper, and I just can't get enough. I'd be pretty happy reading them forever.

So much plot, I am PUMPED for the direction the series is going! Stakes are getting so high with the war and the reconstruction of vampire Society and Culture. Seeing the Chosen side of things was so interesting to learn about I’m so happy we got to know them more.

The love story seemed secondary to all of the major overarching series plot points. I also realized that in book 5 there was 0 lesser POVs and so it makes sense that this book would need to make up for it. Phury and Cormia have similar vibes to Butch and Marissa but with different circumstances. Cormia is an icon. I did not realize how much BS Phury was dealing with and had to grow from so I’m glad he got his development moment, it was just not the direction I thought this book would be going in.

No epilogue? Sad

This was my least favorite of the series. It was very slow starting. I do not know if there was just too much information included or what was going on but too many times I put it down and read other things in between. I hope the next one gets better. I think I am going to skip the insider guide for now and go straight to Lover Avenged.

Oh the junior high drama of this is palpable. Really Phury is how old? I wanted so much for Phury’s book to be good, I like his character prior to this book and he deserved a good story, but honestly he didn’t get one. Most of the relationship angst was the level of a junior high relationship full of selfishness and miscommunication. His story with Cormia could have been so much better than it was. I was expecting more of a Big Love scenario or how they as a couple deal with him being the Prime Male but that was not what happened.

“It was hard to know what was worse: him being with her and all her sisters, or him being with none of them because his heart was held by another.

I’m not going to spend a lot of time on this review since I didn’t like most of this book for the following reasons: Phury is a drug addict and his thinking is completely whacked out. His inner dialogue was just crap all the monkey on my back stuff aka the Wizard encouraging him to light up really just annoyed me. I didn’t care about most of the other PoVs going on and there were a lot of them in this book. Phury complained and whined so much….I get it he is self-sacrificing and no one appreciates it but really did the author need to hit me over the head with that so many times. Phury didn’t even get the best sex scene in the book, that goes to Rev as strange as it was. Also, just my own pet peeve, who are all these promiscuous men and women who rush off to have sex and group sex in bathrooms, I’ve never rolled my eyes so much as I did during those interludes.

The whole time in this book we are reminded how not whole Phury is. Zsaddist was broken for sure but Phury was just as messed up for different reasons. I could have pretty much skipped almost all of Phury’s PoVs. I grew to like Cormia as time went on and she became her own person but even that took quite a while.

“He tapped the artificial leg. “I am not whole.” True, she thought sadly. He was not whole, although it had nothing to do with him missing part of a limb.”

The only things that save this book are the John/Quinn/Blay bromance. They get the best dialogue and I really like the brotherly bond between them. John/Xhex interactions there were only a few but I like what that seems to be building to. Rev and his problems and the penance he has to pay to keep his secret. His sex scene, disturbing as it was, was the best of the book. I didn’t’ really like Lash’s PoVs but I liked his fate and the direction of the enemy of the story. But all the side PoVs don’t add up to a great book or even a good one

Maybe I should have liked the end more and I might have if I wasn’t just waiting for this book to be over so I could start Rev’s story. Really all and all a disappointment.

Way too many plot lines and Phury was extremely infuriating (no pun intended

The Story:

This was a reread for me. I think this book should be called The Book of Revelations. So much happened. I know it was Phury and Cormia’s book but there were major stories for John, Qhinn, Blay, Zadist,Bella and Rhev.
