every female character just had to be sexualised in this which is disgusting. if i wasn’t a big fan of the anime then i wouldn’t keep reading but i’ve heard that the manga is a lot better so i will push through it. i love the overall story. hopefully this stuff doesn’t ruin it for me

I fell in love with this anime when it came out, but I've not managed to read any of the manga until now. I like that it was fast paced--the panels move quickly throughout the fight scenes and there is a sense of urgency. This manga is essentially the first 4 episodes of the anime, so I was very familiar with the plot and there wasn't a lot of deviation. However, I'm sure there will be a lot more later on in the series and I'm excited to see where that goes. I was a little surprised by the amount of fan service here, especially since the show cuts it down quite a bit, but I didn't think it took away from the overall storytelling. The characters are wonderfully strong and it's clear that this is just the beginning to a complex plot. I can't wait to see where this goes!

For: fans of Halloween/horror tropes; readers looking for a manga that is a little spicy and has a lot of fighting action; readers looking for a series with strong characters and complex world-building.

Possible red flags: violence, action, and gore; female nudity (though undefined) and a fair amount of fan service; references to infidelity (not main teen cast); murder; characters in peril; language and crude humor.

thought there would be less sexual harassment of the teenage girls in the manga but but alas. there's even more than the anime

I watched the anime way before I even picked this up. I must say I'm actually disappointed by reading the actual manga that the anime I really like is based on.

Looking at the first chapter right off the bat, Maka and Soul are drawn very oddly. Soul's features don't take up a large portion of his face as it should, making his eyes look tiny and his mouth normal and therefore a little younger than he should be. Maka also looked really weird. I can't describe it.. Well, both looked much younger in the first chapter than when it was translated into anime format.

I don't know why, but I just didn't get the same enjoyment out of it as I did with the anime. It all seemed so boring. I mean, if I like an anime I'll read the manga and 9/10 I'll enjoy it--usually more than the anime because

1) Most times the anime quits at a certain point but the story continues on in the manga

2) The manga has certain things that the anime didn't add or couldn't animate

But if I read the manga and like it I'll definitely watch the anime because

1) The characters are animated! And they have voices! And colors!!

2) The anime usually adds bits that aren't in the manga, and fight scenes are much better since everything is looped together in motion

But Soul Eater manga? Pass. I even read 5 volumes of it and I thought it sucked. The ecchi wasn't so gratuitous in the anime as it was in the manga, and I thought the ecchi was immature and out of place. These are underaged kids if I'm not mistaken. Isn't Liz like, 16? That's still not old enough to have a mummy's tendril-wrappings grabbing at her panties in a fashion that it looks like it's about to be completely torn off.

And having Tsubaki completely naked? Oh wow, not drawing the nipples TOTALLY makes it okay. Seriously, check chapter 2 out. There is like.. a space where the 'globes' don't 'close up' because he left a space for where the nipples should be. Either draw it or don't! I don't want this 'too sensitive for the children' crap.

And what also bothered me was that Tsubaki's hair for a few pages was like, screentoned like red hair would be.. red-red hair, and then the author suddenly decided to ink it as black. WTF?

And I love shonen manga but all the crap and screaming and this manga's flavor of the age old 'muster enough will power to defy all odds and win' totally made me yawn and roll my eyes (mentally, of course. I don't roll my eyes in real life, actually) ... Seriously..

Here's a rant about Black Star:
Spoiler

AND BLACK STAR IS SO ANNOYING!!!! OH MY GOD! I want to kill him. And screw Tsubaki for putting up with that loud mouth! I mean for God's sake. Surpass God? Seriously? I'm offended because this kid's stupid enough to think that he can out-train and 'beat' a metaphysical creation of the human mind .. No offense, religious people, but God is not something you really 'see', aren't I right?

Did this guy get dropped on his head when he was little? You can't beat something that is in everyone's heads. The creator of The Golden Compass wanted to KILL GOD. But you can't 'kill' a deity or spirit. The only way you can do that is to kill anyone who worships that deity or god and destroy all evidence of it ever 'existing' (texts, art, buildings, statues, idols, etc.). That's the only way. THE ONLY WAY. And I do NOT find his spunkiness and constant clammering for attention to be smile-worthy or ... commendable.. "He never gives up." Yeah, because he's fucking stupid as shit! This is the kind of guy in offices that causes wars! Because he thinks he can do it, but he can't! And then when he fails he just puffs his chest out and goes,
"Whaddya talking about? I totally beat him up!"
"Idiot! You are bleeding from the friggin skull! There's an ice pick lodged in your forehead!"
"No there isn't!"
"I swear to God, if you make this into a Monty Python joke, I will RAPE YOUR SKULL WITH THAT ICE PICK. In and out and in and out--! I can't hear your screaming over the sound of my "IN AND OUT IN AND OUT"s!!!!"

So you can see I have a problem with him.

Disappointed, all in all.. I doubt I would've liked Soul Eater the anime as much as I do if the art was strictly transferred between the two mediums.

This is so damn cool and I can't wait to read more from the series. There is for sure a huge amount of sexual harassment and assault that is treated as a joke which is very much not okay but I somehow expected it from manga?! I don't know why. Apart from that I loved the soul weapons and the fights and the partnering up.
