Soul Eater is my favourite anime so I decided to start reading the manga and as predicted I also love it! If you like the show I would highly recommend!

I like the concept of this series--"weapon meisters" control weapons that have human forms and eat souls--but I couldn't seem to get into it. There was some typical shonen cliches, like boob jokes and nose bleeds and that one guy who thinks he's all that but isn't (and the pervy old man), but the cool background illustrations (like a crescent moon bleeding from its mouth) would have made up for that. The real problem was that halfway through the book, I had no idea why the weapon meisters needed to harvest souls. That seemed like a huge omission, so I got frustrated and gave up.

Oh man oh man, I love this crew! (I mean, Black Star is the worst, but he’s still sort of loveable?) I think my adoration for the characters made it incredibly easy to slip into the story and enjoy it. We’re introduced to our main 3 teams of Meisters and Weapons and see the road they’re traveling, plus the end goal of creating Death Scythes, but there are plenty of fun adventures and wacky side characters in the mix as well.

The art itself actually improves chapter by chapter and the more we see of the world, the stronger the cooky and strange atmosphere becomes. I’m not sure if I ever picked up on the multiple different pop culture references before, so thanks to the translator’s notes for that!

I will say, the fan service does make me roll my eyes and there are a few jokes that might have flown in 2004, but definitely don’t today, but all in all, I’m already obsessed again.
