Nuns against necromancy is one of my favourite themes. I really enjoyed this, the relationship between Artemisia and the Revenant was fun, and the mystery of the Old Magic was decent. Slight pacing issues but nothing that detracted too much

I am a full on love my romance and fantasy gal, However this book was so good. The world the stakes the characters the twist,(yes I saw part of it coming, did it ruin the actual reveal? NO!) Artemisia, is a girl who lived through something horrific, has the scars to remind herself and others, and prefers her quiet life with the dead at the Nunnery. Her lifes direction is forever changed when the confessor comes to see if she can sense relics, and especially High relics. Instinctively Art realizes she should play dumb. During this test a missive is sent there are dead possesed soldiers on their way to the Nunnery.
In order to protect the Nuns and save the possesed soldiers she takes on a relic, a Revenant attached to a martyed Saint. Thus begins Art's Internal battle to not be taken over by the Revenant.
As for the Revenant it is not good nor bad, it has power, it also seems to have respect for it's vessel, although spews a lot of disdain for the weakeness a flesh wrapping has. I loved the Revenant, it was sarcastic, and intelligent and hearing it's voice was a lot of fun. I loved Artemesia she was tough, and so used to just working past pain of all sorts that she ignored her bodies signals and had to have the Revenant tell her to stop eat sleep drink clean yourself off. the relationship between them was really fun to watch unfold. World building was awesome you could feel the city in it's hustle and bustle, and the desperation of it;s people, the fog and the mist, converging to make the place feel eerie and ancient. There was a couple Animal companions I loved a horse and a White Raven named Trouble. And there was some new friends/Allies. Which was fun to watch because before Art was alone and people seemed to fear her. It was nice seeing her open up and trust. All in all I feel like for a YA it had all the themes I loved as a young reader, and some adult ones as well it is a very layered book 100% think it should be read by folks who like Fantasy and quests and battles of good and evil. My favorite line in the book was. "You arent a good person, but I think you could be if you tried. So try." Something we all need to hear.
