This wasn’t my cup of tea.
A couple of dot points on why I did not enjoy this:
- too slow
- feels like there is no plot/aim
- main character doesn’t really have much of a personality
- really confusing and I hardly understood anything
- written badly but not too badly
- I think it’s put me into a reading slump

I expected better since I liked this author’s other books. With a few tweaks this could have turned out to be better.

I FUCKING LOVED THIS BOOK.
i love how gritty, dark and creepy it was. there’s nothing i love more than religious imagery and the horror aspect of it. i could imagine every single spirit perfectly, it was so so cool. i loved the riveners.
i was so interested in the idea of saints and how they’re martyred just for the people to believe in something, that was a very important aspect of it, in my opinion. also the whole “weird creature living inside my head who talks to me” is one of my favorite tropes ever, the revenant was such a compelling part of the story, artemisia and it were similar in some way and i absolutely adored that partnership those two had. how artemisia protected it just as much as the revenant protected her. they were both outsiders in their own world and that made them a good pair.
leander was also cool, complex characters like that always get me. i wonder if we’ll see more of him again? i’m glad he didn’t die.
artemisia is extremely interesting and badass, i loved reading about her, but that’s just the usual in margaret rogerson’s writing. she has a way to make every character connect with the reader so effortlessly (captain enguerrand had my daddy issues acting up).
i’m very happy i finally read the last book of hers i was missing, can’t believe it took me so long to read it. anything she writes, i read. i absolutely loved it and i really hope there’s another book in this world!

“Sometimes, if you want to save other people, you need to remember to save yourself first.” This was the perfect book to get me out of my fantasy slump and I’m always here for a sassy companion!

Honestly one of the best books I've read all year. Characters are rich the story is really interesting and the themes are also incredible.

Bonus points for

The revenant was the true main character for me. I loved getting to know them. Their banter with the nun was entertaining. Marguerite was also a surprise highlight. Overall, it was an enjoyable story. I would have liked to know more about the other revenants and the story did get a little dull at some points.

An autistic-coded nun (who would rather deal with the dead than the living) who has a snarky revenant possessing/helping her.
The dedication:

TO EVERYONE WHO WOULD RATHER SIT IN A CORNER PETTING THE DOG THAN MAKE CONVERSATION AT A PARTY: THIS ONE’S FOR YOU.

I really enjoyed this, by far my favourite by the author.

There are great twists. Unexpected friendships. A talking Raven called Trouble. A traumatised heroine who just wants to be left alone, but also can’t leave people behind.

<b>If you want to save other people, you need to remember to save yourself first.

Perhaps deep down inside everyone was just a scared animal afraid of getting hurt, and that explained every confusing and mean and terrible thing we did.

It was a bit hard to get into due to the information dumps, but the wit and dry humour kept me engaged.

I think the book tried to do too much with the world-building and I still couldn’t really tell you the specifics.

This sets up for there to be a sequel, but it isn’t unsatisfying as a standalone.

If you enjoyed this, read the Bonesmith.

I read this book in a couple of days and let me tell you that I freaking loved it! In the beginning i thought there was a romance part too then I slowly realised the real relationships were the ones that Artemisia created with Marguerite, Charles, Jean, the Revenant and Leander too<3
This book was truly a rollercoaster of emotions, i cried, laughed, cried again. I was scared and then felt happy and warmed.
Leander was giving mixed signals since the beginning and I knew something was off, I was so happy when I actually understood he wanted to do the right things. (As he said; the end justifies the means).

Thank you Margaret for this amazing book and thanks Italy for translating it. I am truly amazed and satisfied.
