two stars and i'm actually being generous

Wow. This was everything I thought it would be in a dark and twisted way. This was nothing like I have ever read before and I really enjoyed reading something completely new in the ploy, story line and characters.

Warning: As mentioned, this is half “dark romance” and a half of “mafia romance”. Readers be warned. I also recommend reading at least Sparrow before getting into this.

This is a release I know many LJ Shen’s sassy sparrows have been counting down the days. It follows Sam Brennan, Troy & Sparrow Brennan adoptive son from Sparrow, and his dark past and present collides with Aisling Fitzpatick- the little sister of Hunter & Cillian from the previous two books in the series “The Hunter” & “ The Villain”, however I don’t feel like you have to have read those two books before this book - I recommend reading Sparrow more.

Sam has had a dark tragic upbringing. Up till he was adopted at 9, he was addicted to drugs, alcohol and smoked. He had a mum who was more into men then her son and he forever felt like no one cared. This helped him follow his adoptive fathers foot steps into the “mobster” life, but going more darker into the mafia world instead. Being known as Boston’s Monster.

Aisling is called the “spoilt little princess”. At 27, she’s still living at home to take care of her mum and be the dutiful daughter she has raised to be. Until she gets an illegal job she can’t turn down and starts lying to everyone around her. Except Sam. Because she can’t ever hide anything from Sam.

Sam does spend about 75% of this book denying his feelings for Aisling, and it was frustrating but also understood. When they get together, it truly is a beautiful disaster.

The ending was epic. And I don’t want to give much away except, read this book. Even if you read it as a standalone. It’s different. It’s dark. It’s tragic. It’s addictive steamy romance at its best.

4.5/5 stars with 3/5 steam. Thank you for an ARC for review Social Butterfly PR.

Why are they so fixated on the word 'monster' please stop, ALSO SAM WAS A PIECE OF SHIT AND I SWEAR HALF OF THE SEX WAS LIKE BORDERLINE R*PE. Aisling has no respect for herself and acted so desperate for years that it was embarrassing, I might have forgiven her if she let him grovel like Ava Chen but no you let him have sex with you right away. Not 1 star because well it's a dark romance and I didn't hate HATE it.

I couldn't get over all the high reviews for Sparrow or Vicious when I read them years ago but now I understand. This one was truly awful though - I hated everyone and don't get me started on how much of an embarrassment the MFC was. I've come to the conclusion here that some people just give her five stars no matter how shitty her books are and rave about them. Thank god for KU and libraries. I'd be pissed if I paid for this!

S0me authors get better over time, she's not one, she's gotten worse or maybe its just lazy. Her writing is cringe worthy, her MMC are even worse - over the top stereotypical douchebag manwhores- but worst of all her females are pathetic doormats. Like so many have said in their reviews- I got second-hand embarrassment so bad I skimmed to the end just to see if it would end the way I thought it would. It did. I can read authors who rely on tropes or certain cliches (I like Addison Caine/ but at least she can write well). This was shit from beginning to end.

I don't care about the drama surrounding the author. I am judging the book, and the book is aweful. The heroine has no back bone and is treated by the ML like a crap and then comes back for more. It takes about 77% of the book for her to grow a spine and it is still a pretty weak one.

It is boring, predictable read that is just not worth anyone's time and what is more money. I also think this is the last book of this author I have pre-ordered, as the last year or so is just a steady but firm decline.

Don't waste your time on this.

DNF at 61% I tried to push through but I couldn’t. I absolutely hate books where the girl pines after the boy… she BEGGED him to have sex with her so many times. And he was just gross.
dark funny medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

Another idiot, underboss wannabe. You will think the same when you read the book.

The very idea of revenge is stupid. And the plot is sucked from the finger. The heroine is a doormat, up to the moment when she decides to entice the hero to follow her and seek her, which is completely at odds with her character. She is not an interesting personality at all, all her hurtings cause yawning.

Wow. Just wow! I loved it!

I had a lot of anticipation for this story. The Hunter was my first LJ Shen novel and I fell in love with her writing. As I continued to read her work I knew she could write dark well. Between her books Sparrow, The Hunter, and The Villian, I had so much curiosity for Sam’s character and I couldn’t wait. Then we have Aisling. The soft character you know can’t be that soft if she is paired with the King of Boston’s Underground.

I knew going into this Sam was going to destroy me, but Aisling, boy did I underestimate her. I loved her character. In a book called The Monster, she was perfection. It was a cat and mouse game, but you got enough each time to not be frustrated. The push and pull made sense. They both pushed and pulled at exactly the right time in the story. The way LJ brought them together, I loved it.

Somehow, all at the same time, this story seemed to finish what the book Sparrow started, completed the drama of the Fitzpatrick household, and left room open for Belle’s story to be told next. I absolutely loved this book!

Love the Monster

Aisling & Sam!

The story just pulled me in, I couldn’t put it down. I love this series and can’t wait for the rake!
