3.5 stars. I flew through this after quitting around 30% almost five years ago. It was incredibly entertaining but I am not a new super fan of this series. I will definitely continue in this trilogy at some point but I’m still unsure about the Mortal Instruments.

Holy crap! Cassandra Clare has done such an amazing job with Will Herondale. I don’t think I’ve ever read a character more tortured, angsty, self-loathing, and self-sabotaging as him. The mask hardly ever falls. It speaks absolute volumes to Cassie’s gift for character depth and evolution. I love this series. I love these characters. Tessa is such a relatable fmc even after all these years. Thomas’s death hit me HARD which I don’t remember feeling like that. Would love something from his pov!

I read and enjoyed the Mortal Instruments earlier this year, so I was really looking forward to this one. And I liked it even more than the Mortal Instruments. Victorian London is always fun to read about, and as a bonus, I didn't have to deal with any annoying hipsters running around NYC. Plus, the editing was definitely sharper in this book than in the previous series. There was only one passage that made me crazy! Definitely an intriguing set up, and I'm excited to read the rest.

this book came to me at a time when i really needed to feel the simple, childlike joy and escapism that only a magical YA fantasy with a love triangle can provide. except, this one was actually well written? and the love triangle is actually good? insanity.
but seriously, reading this curled up in a chair at the library, and ravenously under blankets in the dark with my reading light at 4am while hiding from my real-life issues…an experience that has truly reconnected me with why reading is so important to me. i fear cassandra clare finally has a dire chokehold on me, which was perhaps inevitable.
also will herondale and jem carstairs i want you so bad…just one chance………
