I might try again later, but I didn't like the characters very much so I got stuck.

It is written well, especially if you like a lot of description, (like, a LOT) but the plot can definitely be slow sometimes. I had to pick it up and put it back down many times over a few months because I couldn’t get into it. The beginning is very slow but it picks up in the middle to the end.
It goes without saying that the Phantom of the Opera is a creepy, emotionally-manipulative perv. The book definitely makes him creepier than the 2004 movie (as is noted at the end), and he’s less ghoul-y than in the 1925 movie, but it’s not necessarily a scary book. The romance parts between Raoul and Christine are decent, though he constantly compares her to a child and honestly she is quite naive at times.
Overall I would say: it’s okay. The vocabulary is often too advanced for my little brain. I don’t see myself reading it again but I understand the hype. And I’m glad I can say I have read it now!

Everyone knows the story of Christine and the Phantom. If you don't, you obviously have lived under a rock. That being said, I'm not going to waste your time on the plot here.

The book version of The Phantom of the Opera is very close to what you've likely experienced in the movie or musical. When I pick up older books that have more modern adaptations, I expect the story to feel muted. I expect the prose to make the emotions of the characters feel distant. I expect less action. I especially expect female leads to have no discernible personality.

I'm happy to say that this book far exceeds these expectations. Christine is the most dynamic and vivid character I've ever read in a book from this time period. I also enjoyed the plot devices within the book more than I did in the adaptations. The plot had far more tension and mystery within these pages. If you're looking to dive deeper into the story we all know and love, I highly recommend picking up his book!

Okay, I kind of love that I didn't clue into James D'Arcy being the voice of Raoul until literally just now (two days after finishing the listen). He was 100% swoonworthy even before I knew it was him, haha!

It's been a long time since I read _Phantom_ in physical book form, and I really enjoyed picking up the story again in this format. The dramatization was very well done, and I felt it brought the story vividly to life. Would happily listen again.
