I found this book very meh. I really disliked the writing style, it made it difficult to read. The idea of the story was interesting and other than having a hard time with the writing style I enjoyed the book initially, I was interested in seeing how the plot unfolded. However, once I was finished, it was just such a let down.

It was 400+ pages of lots of questions and verrrry few/limited answers due to characters holding pertinent information back from other characters and I can’t stand that in stories. It’s okay when it’s just initial and then eventually you get the info once trust is built etc, but this lasted the entire book. Due to the writing style, even some of the things we got answers to were confusing because the author was trying to be too poetic and didn’t actually end up getting the point across.

I don’t need elaborate world building, but this book was pretty lacking and there wasn’t much info on the magic system.

This also had the religion/faith/cult story line where the “church” gets too much control and I never enjoy that type of plot. I find it quite exhausting and annoying.

The book had a lot of potential, but it just didn’t deliver for me. One thing I did enjoy though was the love story between the two main characters. It was certainly a slowwww burn with not much payoff, however there was something about it that I enjoyed. It felt genuine and sweet.

I don’t think I’m going to read the sequel to this book, I mostly just don’t care how things turn out and it took me a while to get through this one.

I really wanted to like this book, but it gave me nothing to grab on to. The story took too long to take off, character moments felt underserved, and the magic system didn’t make sense. Overall, I felt like everything was tell, not show, and it just felt like a slog to get through.

I enjoyed the concept and the storyline of the book, but there were multiple times where I had to re-read parts because the writing seems to jump. I would give it a 3.5 if I could.

After reading the second book, my appreciation of the first book grew. The books should not stand alone as they do create an engaging, adventurous tale as a duology.

I LOVE this so much!! Atmospheric, darkly romantic, beautiful writing, and such an interesting story. I cannot wait for the sequel because I MUST know what happens. I will say that this book had a few minor inconsistencies that bothered me (Neve mentions wearing a pendant under her dress and in the next chapter she says she so glad she never wore that pendant...) but overall it did not detract from the good time I had!! Also I would love a short story or something about the Edge?! It seems fascinating.

This is a good book. I can tell this is the author’s first book but I enjoyed it and will be reading the next as I’ve heard Hannah has grown into her writing style.
