16-year old Gemma is drugged and abducted from a Bangkok airport while on vacation with her parents. Her captor spirits her away to a shack in the middle of the Australian outback, where there's nothing and no one else for hundreds of miles. He's young and attractive. He doesn't rape her, hurt her, or threaten her. He just won't let her leave, and if she could escape, she wouldn't get far. What's more, she feels she knows him from...somewhere. Who is this strange man? Is there any way to escape? Does she even want to?
This was really well-written. I didn't notice any clunky prose or lazy characterization that you often see in these types of books. The conflict was realistic and I was satisfied with the ending. The description of the desert, plants and animals and atmosphere, was evocative and wondeful. Don't want to spoil it, but I was happy that despite the fact that the kidnapper was like, Edward Cullen levels of creepy, this isn't allowed to turn into that kind of romance.
I would definitely recommend this book to all types of teens.

I read this book in middle school (probably shouldn’t have) and just finished rereading as an adult. I flew through it for a second time and still enjoyed it. The premise is gross and beyond messed up, but still a good read.
This is my new favorite book. It was much different than anything I have ever read. I cried at the end and was so sad when it finished. I literally just finished the book 5 minutes ago. I definitely recommend this books to others.
Imagine being trapped on an island like Robinson Crusoe, except you are in the middle of the desert in Australia and you were kidnapped, drugged, and stolen away.
This Printz honor book is a tale of survival, a thriller/horror story (like the girls in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Gemma is constantly trying to escape from the place in the middle of nowhere where no one will find her unless she can get out alive). It is also a story of incredibly complicated feelings, which adds richness and makes it really come to life.
I enjoyed this book, and in many ways it felt like an expanded short story given the arc of the tale, rather than a 300 page novel. For this reason, I don't know if teens would be captivated enough to make it through, but I could certainly be wrong.
Recommended for those who like survival tales, complicated and forbidden romance, like the book How I Live Now minus the war.

Predictable and creepy, I really didn't like it, but hoped the ending would turn things around....no. I'd have a hard time recommending it in class.

I admitt, the ending was disappointing. I was so sure she was going to stay. But it was still an amazing story that I garuntee I'll read again...and again and again.
This book kept me on the edge of my seat throughout most of it. There were some slow parts, but overall a good read!
LOVED this book!! One of the first chapter books I ever read. The whole kidnapping thing was super interesting in my opinion. And the ending was really nice.
