Great book for the fall! I would call this book historical fiction fantasy. I really enjoyed the writing and I’m looking forward to reading the sequel.
I like this book better than Brackston's time travel series. Can't decide whether or not I want to read the next book.
One question, though: If Bess/Eliza/Elise/Elizabeth were so worried about Gideon being able to track her down through the centuries, why didn't she change her surname? Hawksmith would have been pretty conspicuous in any century, no matter what first name she used. Clearly, keeping her name so easily recognizable was a contrivance on the author's part to make sure that her readers understood that Bess, Eliza, Elise, and Elizabeth are all the same person. As if we couldn't figure that out. So I kind of feel a little condescended to.

Though I didn't find the depth of the characters satisfying, this has very strong Addie LaRue vibes and I thoroughly enjoyed it
Lovely. Well-written. Well-researched. And I want those shoes in the cover. Actually the whole outfit.
What an exasperating book! We all should agree that Anne Hawksmith, Bess’s mother, doomed her. She let everyone else in the family die and then “saved Bess” to be delivered to an egotistical, rapist (Gideon)! Also, Bess witnessed Gideon rape a girl and then she lusted after him. GIRL! BFFR! Well, this is to be expected of Bess, the epitome of intelligence. Especially being on the run and using different variations/nicknames for Elizabeth and her original last name of Hawksmith (e.g. Eliza Hawksmith and Elise Hawksmith). Absolutely brilliant! Also, when it comes to meeting Ian, Tegan’s boyfriend (before she found out Ian was Gideon-which was painfully obvious), and realizing he was a grown ass man with a teenage girl…screw Tegan’s feelings and sensitivities. Get that teenage girl away from that man! Lastly, but certainly there is so much more infuriating instances but I wish to not expel excess energy, the ending was absurd. I’m all for women empowerment but the way the ending transpired felt elementary and cringe; a forced sisterhood without any substance to it other than other witches appearing really. That is all. I do not recommend.

Nicely done paranormal historical. Give it a few chapters...it gets better. Very enjoyable.
Felt like the ending fell a little flat and felt rushed. I don't know how I was really expecting it to end, but, I don't know, not like that.
