First half of book was really good, weaving in journal style entries and narrative prose.
Didn't care much for it by the second half. By page 300, I just skimmed the rest.

An immortal witch is exclusively heterosexual and that's just the start of how frustrating this book is.
The historical parts are slow and predictable. In particular
The magic is obviously written from the most perfunctory of research - a little bit of aromatherapy, a little bit of modern wicca and more than a generous helping of pop culture's preconceptions of witches, satanism and black magic. And even then there is very little magic in this book. This is not the book for you if you want world building or loving descriptions of witchcraft.

Bess takes her sweet time in the later two sections to cotton onto who Gideon is masquerading as - even after a couple of centuries Bess is bewilderingly naive as to Gideon's tricks. (And I'm sure this would be even more frustrating in print, as Gideon is a fan of using anagrams to 'conceal' his identity.)The magic is obviously written from the most perfunctory of research - a little bit of aromatherapy, a little bit of modern wicca and more than a generous helping of pop culture's preconceptions of witches, satanism and black magic. Started off pretty good, but just started to fall flat. The main character is kinda boring and doesn't evolve through all these years. Finally the descriptions of magic just did me in. Not for me.

I did not expect to like this book as much as I did. I enjoyed the overall plot and of course I love witches! The writing was beautiful and immersive and the FMC was great. There was a part that lost my interest, but eventually I got pulled back in. I look forward to reading the next book in the series!
Bought on sale from Kindle as the idea seemed interesting. Overall it is a story within a story and individual stories were much more interesting than the current/modern story.
I liked Bess quite a bit and her experience living through the centuries. I was bemused at the times in history that the author chose for Bess to relate her story. They seemed Forrest Gump convinent.
I did not care for Tegan or the modern day story and was impatient for the end.

A witch from the 1600s is chased through time by her nemesis. I enjoyed the parts that took place in the past more than the present day storyline. The overall story was dark and kept me intrigued, but overall I felt the characters were under developed.
