Mar da Tranquilidade

Goth chick hottie camouflages her suffering beneath black makeup and obscene mini-dresses to repel fellow students at her new high school in this grim, yet surprisingly uplifting YA romance. This tawdry, self-imposed orphan wears more scars than clothing. Her unwillingness to return to her once pristine life transforms her into a mute outcast who intentionally seeks isolation from everyone...everyone except the equally cryptic boy in her shop class. Their friendship, built in his garage amidst sawdust and power tools, evolves into an "expected" thing. But they continue to dance around her closely guarded secret until they spin out of control and collapse in a heap of senseless jealousy and heartbreak.

The reasons I avoid YA are present in this book, such as my inability to relate to the self-destructive, unsophisticated mindset of a teenager and the bane associated with holding onto the tender V card. But character development is crucial to this plot and KM executes it skillfully. This H/h have been forced into a tragic emotional maturity and their journey to recovery is an exquisite mess. It's a journey you won't regret taking. And one you won't forget.

Note: This is mature YA with sexual situations and one non-graphic sex scene.

Can you find your way through such tragic events? There is much to think about.

I cannot even begin to discuss this book. Just read it. You will be emotionally wrung out and aching by the end but will just want more. I laughed, I cried, it moved me Bob! All I can say for sure is that Katja Millay needs to write more...like, now!

Only word I have for this book is, Amazing.

I liked that this was a "real" book. It was kind of dark and depressing, but sometimes those books stick with ya. This was one of them for me. From the first opening page to the last two words, the author hooked me. This book had "all the feels".

(Side note - I would not recommend if language is an issue...it was a bit rough in parts.)

I have been hearing great things about this book for ages and let me tell you, it does not disappoint!! AHH how to express how much I loved this book? It's interesting, its compelling, dark, mysterious... I kind of feel like I'm describing an incredibly hot man, but maybe this book is the incredibly hot man of the book community? It turns all the girls to mush and all the other men are green with envy.

This is an intense and emotional read about two very complex characters who are haunted by their terrible pasts and find solace in one another. The writing was absolutely gorgeous, there were parts where I was so invested in the story that I simply could not put the book down. Not only where there the deep and serious moments that had you sitting on the edge of your seat but there was also really lovely light moments and a hilarious inner monologue that made me laugh out loud. Both characters, Nastya and Josh are extremely likeable characters who you can't help but love! They both have a fun side that make you smile and giggle but also a darker side that makes you want to understand the inner workings of their minds. I also absolutely adored Drew! He was a character that became a lot more complex and interesting than I first believed him to be. He was also a source of some much needed comic relief during some intense scenes.

I am so grateful that I finally picked this book up! One hundred per cent worth it!! This a heartfelt story that will draw you straight in and blow your mind.
