Due to me being sick, but still wanting to write a review I will just do a small good/bad review.

Good:
-Romance between Fade. Finally, took them long enough, though at around the ending (no spoilers) it saddened me.
-The village and the description of it + history.
-I loved how Deuce started calling the Oaks as mom/dad/mother/father. And how she slowly broke down her walls and started to hug them, started showing affection to those she loved, for someone who never was taught that, for someone who never had a chance to develop such feelings it was a big step and I was just cheering for Deuce.
-More Deuce, I loved how willingly she was to learn (only not in school, but I can imagine why. No one wants to sit with little ones and be made fun of because they never got taught the basics of reading/writing and so on).
-The answers we got about the freaks! Yay! Finally we find out a bit more about them. I will still call them zombies though, due to their nature and the fact they still eat and kill people.
-The cover. I love it! It was super creepy and it made me love the book more (yes I am a real cover lover).

Bad:
-The Love Triangle between Stalker, Deuce and Fade. Seriously guys... Deuce is also not helping due to her not knowing about feelings/relationships and such. She doesn't understand that she hurt Fade by acting the way she did.
I really got tired of the constant quarrels between them, the constant tension. Come on guys, I am reading this book for the zombies, not for constant drama between 2 guys and 1 girl.
-Deuce, she was at times just a bit awkward and weird. She knew the right words now, but kept using the older names. Instead of saying people, she still called those who got kids: breeders and the ones who made stuff: builders. Same for some other words. It just felt out of context here.
-The ending. I know, I know there is a third book (I am reading it), but seriously? All that tension, all that dramatic stuff? And you will just have to read the 3rd book to find out what happens. Urgh.

All in all, the book was 90% good and I really loved it, it is really becoming a favourite series of mine. I would really recommend this series to everyone.

I didn't quite enjoy it as much as the first one. This one felt quite repetitive at times. Still a fascinating group of characters and world through!

TW: Sexual Assault (on page), mentions of rape

This is the sequel to Enclave and while I liked it less than the first one, I do appreciate that this book wasn’t just a bridge for the final book.

I liked most of the developments in this book. Deuce experienced some culture shock as she tried to adjust to her new way of living and I enjoyed seeing how that developed. I loved how she had this new family and I especially loved her relationship Momma Oaks! It was nice to see her have a mom figure in her life since she’s never had one. Also her relationship with Longshot was nice and nice that he didn’t underestimate her like others just cause she’s a woman.

Aside from that though the rest of this book felt pretty meh to me. While the whole freaks thing got a bit more intriguing, the characters fell a bit flat in realizing.

You obviously have Deuce who is “not like other girls cause she can fight” so there’s that. Fade is supposed to be this “soft boy” but his only personality trait is that he’s in love with Deuce. All he thinks about is Deuce and if he’s not, he’s getting jealous of other men for being near her. Then we have Stalker who I guess is supposed to be the other half of this one sided love triangle. He’s like “a bad boy who didn’t know better” who like Fade is just obsessed with Deuce. I think the author wants us to like him despite the fact he’s done some pretty messed up stuff. (Didn’t he rape other girls? Why is he a potential love interest in the first place even though this isn’t going anywhere?) Just seems questionable to have that not only in a YA book, but in books in general.

The only character of the main four that I do find more interesting is Teagan. I find her probably more interesting than the rest of them otherwise most are pretty one dimensional. It was nice seeing how she developed over this book as she settled into her new life.

The love triangle seems pretty pointless to me. It has no substance especially since she has no interest in Stalker. The whole Stalker plot line makes me so mad in general. He keeps trying to pursue her after she’s said no multiple times. Then he pulls “if this is the last time I see you, I deserve a kiss,” crap. Like what even? The most bizarre part is she goes “That seems fair,” which is so bonkers to me. She doesn’t owe him anything. Also he like kissed her without her consent and so out of nowhere at the end. It was weird.

Fade just seemed to lose any semblance of a personality in this book. The only reason we’re really supposed to care is cause he cares about Deuce. The characters just don’t really have any chemistry and while I wouldn’t say I hate them by any means, there’s nothing (not even their near death experiences) to get me to root for them. I just want more substance to their romance.

I don’t know. I’m still considering reading the next one (and I probably will tbh) but also this series has stayed around the 3 star area for me so I’m not sure if it’s really worth it.

Deuce is learning far more about the Freaks or Muties and the history of Topside. And the mutants are becoming far more formidable at each encounter. Times are perilous and battles bloody and ferocious. Deaths are inevitable in this battle for survival.

Excellent!

3.5 stars.

I liked this one better than the first book.

Here we find Deuce, Fade, Stalker and Teagan settling in Salvation. There is of course the obvious girls who don't like Deuce and the religious fanatics who blame Deuce's "unwomanly" ways on the reason why the Freaks are changing but it wasn't written in a way to annoy me, it actually made the plot of the story flow better.

Overall, it is a pretty good dystopian story and I am looking forward to seeing how it ends.
