Thousand Cranes by Yasunari Kawabata explores many adult themes.  The narration performance by Brian Nishii is outstanding and kept me interested until the end.  This story may be triggering for some people.  The story journeys into dark themes including death, sexuality, transference, infatuation, jealousy, revenge, and the supernatural all set within a backdrop of a culture and society in the process of leaving old traditions behind and adapting new ones.

I would have rated this beautifully written piece higher, except that the book simply stops.  I did learn a lot about the tea ceremony and tea culture.  I would recommend this work to anyone who is deeply interested in Japanese tea culture and modern Japanese literature.
