i keep on reading the new books in this series despite kind of... not enjoying the newer ones over and over again. at this point, I've accepted that I'm just not going to love them (and i don't even need to LOVE them, tbh) they're a fun, fast, "guilty-pleasure" read for me. (I hate the term guilty pleasure, it's stupid, I don't feel guilty about anything that brings me some form of enjoyment, but I don't have a better term. maybe, they're my junk food reads? idk). i enjoyed a lot of things about the original addicted series that revolves around the parents from the like us series, despite also having... a lot of hangups about them. in general, I tend to hate the romances in these... romance novels lol. BUT I really like the familial relationships! and so I keep coming back hoping they will highlight some of those more often, and stop doing the same trope in the romance (an older man, a girl barely out of her teens/early 20s who is Just So Mature for Her Age, a ~secret romance~ with, you guessed it, another goddamn bodyguard, etc. etc. rinse and repeat just with slightly different characters). this isn't to say the bodyguard romance trope isn't fun, it absolutely is!! but literally, everyone in this series falls in love with their bodyguard and it's getting kind of old. the twist of a polyamorous relationship in this one was actually nice! it's not something that's seen very often in the media and it was refreshing and a nice change and there were a lot of things (again, side/background things) that I enjoyed with more hints into other familial relationships. like, seeing Sullivan and Beckett! and Sullivan and Charlie, and the Meadows sisters, and Jane and Sulli were really interesting, and I just wish they'd show more of that instead of keep retreading the same romance tropes over and over, but at this point, that's what they want to write, and I'm just accepting it. there are things I enjoy about them regardless of my lack of interest overall in most of the romance plots, so, that's something!

Gimme that gold medal, cus urge to dnf was chasing me every single page, but I still outrun it

BUT AT WHAT COST😭😭😭

After several books that I really enjoyed (Marrow!), we’ve now come to a few that I don’t care for too much. Sulli is one of my least favorite characters, and has been since essentially her childhood. This is not all on her. It starts with Ryke & Daisy. I know I’ve said it before, their lack of discipline and boundaries is wild!! But at some point, Sulli should’ve grown up. She’s spoiled, entitled, and so crass!! Bravo for being a world class athlete in multiple sports. Truly! But she embodies so many traits of Lily & Lo that I just can’t get into her story.

I’ll try to stick to my normal pros & cons list, but I feel like I get extra rambly when I dislike something! So a lot of this review might be in paragraph form!!

One thing about throuples (or triads) that always make me nervous in books - if there is long standing feelings between two people, or an established relationship, and then a third person comes in. I feel second hand jealousy. Akara & Sulli are the long standing, albeit suppressed, feelings. Banks is the variable. Personally, I’d have preferred it MMF instead of MFM, but we can’t all get what we want!!

They have so many reasons why they shouldn’t be on this trip. First, the businesses. Second, the warning signs. Akara’s dreams and his Thai background. He talks about his family’s superstitions, and how they would consult monks and fortune tellers. He even recalls the fortune teller from the fan con tour who talked about Sulli falling (in love or off a mountain). Speaking of Sulli, her parents hate this. Mainly because of her namesake. Banks is also superstitious and is thinking about Skylar. And third, Jane’s & Thatcher’s wedding.

Speaking of the wedding - Sulli & friends encounter bad weather for about 5 days, so no climbing. Pushed back on the schedule. Never a thought to canceling the trip. She is finally climbing on October 30th. 2 days before the wedding. Now, I know that she is low maintenance in regards to pampering, but Janie might want her there for nails & toes, a night before movie night, etc. But what about Banks? HIS TWIN is getting married!! He should be with Thatcher through every step of this. The selfishness and entitlement makes me ill. She says ā€œwe leave tonight with plenty of timeā€, but what?! It takes about 32 hours to drive from where they are to Philly. And that’s IF there are no issues. No stopping.
Banks is always losing things. Is his tux ready? Does he have his socks? His best man speech? A LOT goes in to a wedding and maybe it’s my OCD brain, but PLANNING to show up the morning of when the 3 of them are IN the wedding makes my skin itch.
Sulli loves Jane like a sister, Thatcher is Akara’s best friend, Thatcher is Banks’ twin brother … someone needed to have put a stop to this and left way sooner. Especially because once she climbs, she’s not even happy!! And oh look, the jeep breaks down!! No cell service, pushing the jeep, no parts, leaving the jeep, delayed flight, and they miss the wedding.
Banks & Thatcher have a very sad phone call and then Banks says ā€œI can’t imagine being here alone.ā€ while being comforted by Sulli and Akara. Bro!! If you weren’t a second bodyguard to a spoiled, selfish, entitled brat you wouldn’t be there at all!! You’d be tying your brother’s tie!!
Other points from the wedding:
Ryke telling Sulli she can leave the wedding because there are a lot of people - NO! This is that spoiled behavior! She can sit in a secluded spot, only talk to who she chooses, etc. But leave?! She just got there!!
The bouquet toss - Sulli is eating during it, not involved in it, and still acts upset because it didn’t land in her arms. *eye roll*

PROS:
I’ll always love Ryke!
And yes please to Connor & Ryke!!
Ricotta on toast

Secondhand embarrassment for the funhouse

Akara ordering Banks not to talk about the funhouse
Akara is in total denial

Not calling Farrow when injured
Winona is rude AF

Banks caring more about Sulli than planning HIS TWIN’S bachelor party

People thinking twins are the same person
Loren Hale

The whole 4AM apartment visit is just awkward. Sulli bugging out over Jenny vs Jennifer - almost all Jennifers I know go by a shortened version. Then the chick calling Akara ā€˜Kits’. Granted, it’s her nickname for him. But Sulli is cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs about nicknames. This girl needed friends growing up!! And then the sex talk!! I’m embarrassed for her!!

Akara has been so busy running his own business(es), that he often puts Banks on Sulli’s detail. Which means a temp guard gets assigned to Moffy when Farrow has a med call. We learned this in a previous book. But now when Sulli decides to take off on her excursions, why do both Akara & Banks have to go? She’s not the most famous, so why does she need two body guards? If Akara has to run Kitsuwon Securities & Studio Nine, he should’ve stayed in Philly.

I’m going to repeat myself, as I’ve mentioned this in previous reviews -
Regarding Migraines: my official diagnosis is chronic interactable migraine. I have suffered for over 40 years. I’m legally disabled due to this disease. I take 16 pills a day as my base. I can take up to 8 additional pills if I’m feeling extra bad. I have tried and denied 27 other meds. OVER THE COUNTER MEDS DO NOT TAKE AWAY A MIGRAINE!!
Tylenol? Please. Just hand the man some skittles!! What is even happening here!! I have a 2-3 page list of triggers. Sun, humidity, barometric pressure changes, scents (like cigarette smoke), food & drink, lights, stress… so many things can cause a migraine. They can last hours to DAYS. It being treated like a generic headache in these books is infuriating.

An audiobook con - why don’t (almost) any of the narrators know how to pronounce Vada?

Favorite Quotes: ā€œMy twin brother, from Cinderella to Adventures in Babysitting.ā€

ā€œHe’s my twin brother. I’d blackmail my own father if it meant making him happy.ā€

BROS THAT COME TOGETHER STAY TOGETHER ✊

i can't believe i'm saying that, but: this is the worst book by KBR that I ever read and i'm a huge fan of theor writing style, i really though that the worst one would be all that oversexualized thing with Marrow, but seeing how they fucked up Kits' participation, how he rarely had moments alone with Sulli and how JUST IN THE LAST CHAPTER, she talks about polyamorosous relationship just got me "what?"

I really hope next book is great - I feel like we had so much attention to Banks (and I don't want to think that's just because he's white and Italian blabla, because that's what I think all the time, btw why have Kits in the front cover when Banks has all the shime?). Anyway, I'm not anxious to the next book, but I really hope they talk over it and with their fans.

The Like Us series is my haven. It feeds me. I love these characters so much, and, like Sulli, I fell completely for Banks and Kits. Sulli's adventuring made for some nail-biting scenes. I'm sorry, but anyone who wants to free-solo climb is completely batshit crazy. Even thinking of her doing that gave me the frissons. But I cannot wait until Book 9 comes out and I get to live more of this triad love story.

This series will be forever in my heart, however this specific book wasn’t for me!

I’m all follow your heart and do what it feels right for you, but FMM stories aren’t for me, and that’s okay
