I'm glad to have read this renowned coming-of-age story which touches on race, slavery, right and wrong and making your own way but I didn't love it. There was a lot of lying and a lot of language belonging to the time which jarred with modern understanding. The story was quite meandering with lots of parts and didn't hang together well for me. Huck was an impressionable character, in some quite desperate circumstances, who just didn't quite have enough about him to make me like him.

This book was not fun to read at all. Once you get pass the racial slurs of black and native people you find it to be a very sad story. Everything is funny in this book (or so I’m told) but all I read about were serious issues about abuse and racism. Ain’t nothing funny about slavery.
