I read James by Percival Everett for a book club. I couldn't remember ever having read this classic, even though I'd heard of it forever. If you've read Huck Finn, you should now read James, which tells the story from Jim's perspective.

An icon of American storytelling, still as relevant today as ever.

I'm glad to have read this renowned coming-of-age story which touches on race, slavery, right and wrong and making your own way but I didn't love it. There was a lot of lying and a lot of language belonging to the time which jarred with modern understanding. The story was quite meandering with lots of parts and didn't hang together well for me. Huck was an impressionable character, in some quite desperate circumstances, who just didn't quite have enough about him to make me like him.
