Sisters Under the Rising Sun is one of the best historical fiction books I’ve read recently. We follow a group of women and children who are captured by the Japanese and held in a POW camp in the Pacific during WWII. The conditions in their camp are poor at best, but the women make the most of their situation by putting on concerts, writing a camp newsletter and more.

I loved the characters, and what’s even more is that many of them are real-life people and the book is based on a true story. I really like the different perspective on WWII historical fiction and feel it’s important to tell stories outside of just Europe.

I was really excited about this book and it didn’t disappoint as it’s one I couldn’t put it down. Thank you to NetGalley, Heather Morris and St Martins Press for the advanced reader copy of this book.

There are numerous books about the German camps and even some about the soviet camps but it is refreshing to read a book based on the experience of women in the Japanese camps. This story was beautifully written and the addition of recordings of some songs within the audiobook made it a very special one to listen to/read

I am a big fan of this sort of book particularly those skillfully written by Heather Morris and this was no exception. Definitely recommend reading especially if you have read many about the other more popularised areas of the war and are seeking another perspective

Out of the other Heather Morris books I have read, this one may have been my least favourite of the bunch. But it was still a good little book

A different and super important angle on the horrors of WWII. I loved Nesta and Norah and really learnt a lot in this book. However, the writing style was odd and the dialogue unrealistic, which made it hard to finish the book

Australian nurses and other civilian women caught up in the internment camps in Indonesia during WW11. As expected, a great deal of crying ensued while finishing this one.
