I love the way Heather Morris tells stories and develops her characters. I thought this book had more individual storylines to follow but they all melded together so well! This book is definitely a tearjerker so make sure you read at home with tissues! Highly recommend!

2⭐️The story could have been interesting, but the writing felt choppy and rushed. The sentences were cut short and storylines ended abruptly and unfinished. There is no flow in the text, the story is incoherent. We don’t really get to know any character, no one stands out and I didn’t care about anyone, even with the book’s primere premise being female war prisoners to the Japanese army. That’s a shame. Like, I finished this book today and I don’t remember any significant character as I am writing this a few hours later.
The dialouges were poorly executed and not realistic at all. The same goes for the relationships. I am supposed to belive over 200 women sing songs and ”come together” and talk the way the book presents it during dire circumstances, where death looms upon them and death threats are a daily courtesy?

This book was very disappointing, especially for someone who loved the Tattooist of Auschwitz series. “sisters” felt like it was written by a different author. It seemed as though it would offer a unique perspective on WWII, but fell short. The novel focuses on a group of women- two sisters and a group of Australian nurses (who are confusingly referred to as “Sister+first name” as though they are nuns). The group starts off on a ship fleeing the fall of Singapore to the Japanese, bound for Australia when it is sunk off the coast of Indonesia. The struggle of these people as they survive the wreck, are separated from their men, and are transported to Japanese-controlled Indonesian prison camps is the most engrossing part of the book. Sadly, this represents a small portion of the novel. The rest is slow paced and repetitive.

There is significant focus on the fact that these women start a choir of sorts and over saturation on details of their choir and how moved they are every time the choir gathers. The hardships they face in the prison camp are glossed over. The dialogue is repetitive and sappy “I hope my child and husband are alive… but I would feel it if they weren’t, etc.” The last 10% of the book renewed my interest, but the majority of this novel struggled to live up to its potential. Not worth your time
