When reading Interview With The Vampire, my least favourite character was Lestat but I knew to get to the rest of the series I had to read this book otherwise it wouldnt make sense. But good lord this book was a struggle. Lestat is so completely absorbed within himself that he cannot show basic compassion for others and this book was him 'telling the truth' of who he was. I wanted to strangle him. The writing style was beautiful and the atmosphere was more consistent with this book. The initial story of Lestat before he was a vampire was very interesting as well as his relationship with Nicolas but I could not stand him in his life as a vampire

The sequel makes Lestat more sympathetic, but I'd say it unfortunately also makes him more... boring. He was more unhinged and unpredictable in IWTV and I kind of missed that, I feel like Anne Rice just automatically turns her POV characters into her self-inserts and the characterisation suffers for it. That being said, overall I think I enjoyed TVL more than IWTV, especially because of all the vampire lore and new characters. It was fun getting to know Marius, Gabrielle, Nicki and Armand's little cult.

I’m loving the Vampire Chronicles way more than I expected. They’re so densely packed, but I love how immersed I feel in the story when I’m reading. It’s easy to start believing the story is really being told by a vampire, because Anne Rice leaves no stone unturned, no passing thought unmentioned, no fleeting emotion unexamined.
