"Hi, I'm the vampire Lestat, and I'm the most specialest boy who ever did live, and everybody loves me in spite of themselves!" Listen, this was a lot of fun, but also woof Lestat is A Lot to spend an entire book with.

Also I would love to read a whole book about Gabrielle. (Anne Rice is dead and her son isn't continuing the series so I hope there's no monkey's paw out there curling.)

The story is fun to read, and I loved Lestat as a character. I enjoyed watching him determine the direction of his life early on. However, the waking of Akasha at the end, while establishing characters for other books, didn't do much for me here and weakened Lestat's story for me. I would have preferred less lore-driven final sections. While we might have learned less about vampires everywhere, we would have learned more about Lestat.

I listened to the audio book, and I think it was abridged, so maybe that's why it was so short, but I definitely felt like it wasn't long enough. And the way it ended, they should have just put this one and Queen of the Damned together. I did really love all the back story and history that you get in this book, but again it just didn't feel finished for me.
