Oh boy. What is there to say? Depressing as hell, both in the moment and in reflecting on current context. Almost all of what has changed has gotten worse. Sacco is not the perfect messenger, but he has a Bourdain-esque way of mocking himself for veering into misery tourism, so it comes across very self-aware. Just a lot of gut punches, one after another. Palestinians don't always come across too well, but always the focus remains on how Israel created this situation. No real solutions or even distinct stances are put forth, and I'm not sure they could be. So while I am filled with the righteous indignation of someone with strong feelings about how to improve things (do the words "zero-state solution" mean anything to you?), this book is really just opening a window into the Palestinian reality, and hoping maybe some readers will also find the door, which will likely be open.

Written well before the destruction of Gaza that began in 2023, this boom really highlights the situation on which most palestinian people find themselves.  The last few pages really bring home just how difficult things are for the palestinian people and just why things are not likely to improve, unless some fundamental changes are made by the occupying forces.

This graphic novel is a classic for a reason. Long form journalism as told through image, dialogue and prose makes for a visceral reading experience. You feel the pain and suffering, you see the propaganda and revisionist history take place before your eyes. It spoke to me more than any news article or documentary on the subject ever could. And as Said says in his intro, beyond the masterful story telling, there is no better medium to speak about Palestine than through a graphic novel which is where we so often encounter subversive material.
