okay, so... this book was hard for me to rate. don't get me wrong, i honestly did like the book! i had a fun time reading it, i loved all the cultural references, many of the descriptions were lovely (especially the food ones!!), and the overall concept is so intriguing with plenty of twists along the way. but i just had a few bigger qualms with it that made it feel wrong for me to rate it higher.

parts of the romance sort of fell flat for me. i understand what the author was going for, but i don't think it was that well executed? i don't know, i'm still a little conflicted. on one hand, there were a lot of really sweet moments between the fmc and her s/o that i really enjoyed, but on the other hand, there was so much that felt so odd to me !!!! so much of their dynamic relied on this big reveal that happens later in the novel, and because it's kept a secret between them for so long, it didn't feel like their connection was very believable or had as much build up as i would've liked. the ending was also just odd and lacked a lot of explanation 😭 like i still was okay with it but idk

i found the setting and world very difficult to visualize. this could also be my fault as the reader, but i do think that some of the author's descriptions were a little odd... bc why is this girl drinking tea... underwater? with no explanation? why does the tea magically stay in the cup and not float in the water? how is she even drinking any liquid while IN WATER? and how tf is she painting underwater... and there are books? and other paper-based objects? a lot of little details like that really broke my immersion in the story. like, i can look past it, but it still felt funkyyy and a little underdeveloped.

i enjoyed truyan as a character a lot !! and elang grew on me a lot too. the side characters, however, were really forgettable imo... i liked tru's family, but i wish they had more time in the book. especially considering how much they meant to her and how emphasized it was that she would do anything for them !!! sigh.... a lot of things just didn't hit me as hard as i thought they would have.

overall, i did enjoy and had a good time, but i just couldn't rate it higher bc i was a little disappointed. still worth it imo tho. while some things sadly did not work for me, i could see them working for others !!

Was this a literary masterpiece? No. Did I predict a few major plot points? Yes. Was this my favorite book I’ve read in a long time? Absolutely. Somehow this author managed to get me SO invested in the plot and all the characters— to the point where I sobbed through the end of the book. It wasn’t just the main characters either— the entire cast was very memorable (coming from someone who often struggles to even remember the main characters names on account of how many books I read!)
I am a sucker for the slow burn push and pull trope- and even though I wanted to throw my phone at the wall listening to the audiobook of this, Lim always had me coming back to read more. In fact, I don’t think I’ve read a book this addicting since the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson. 10/10 recommend if you’re a fan of YA fantasy romance!
