very good reimagining, took me way too long to get a name pun which I'm still mad about. He's called hatcher. Because. He's like the mad hatcher. hatter. Had to read book 2 to get this. I may be stupid. The prose is quick and simple to read, though some of the simplicity starts getting repetitive near towards the end. Overall, Alice and Hatcher are brilliant to read together and their relationship is absolutely endearing beyond measure. I adore them both, Hatcher especially in his trying moments and Alice in her moments of cunning. Great cast all around. Chesire was particularly fun, his layered and obfuscated nature making him one big question mark to keep tugging on. Even the smaller characters we meet briefly are memorable, like the mermaid and butterfly. Some of the thematic elements such as disempowerment, death, exploitation, and such, also get slightly repetitive near towards the end but this book is bleak and I get the inclination towards it, as much as I'd have liked it done a tad differently.

This is a good reimagining of Alice in Wonderland (though definitely for a more grown up audience). I was a little disappointed with the dealing of the two big antagonists towards the end, it just felt basic and too simply done within the last 25 pages. I am still curious as to where the story goes from here so will definitely continue to the next book.

An interesting take on Alice and her adventures, but I didn’t love the writing style and I was never fully immersed in the story. Furthermore, the ending was anticlimactic and I was not a fan of the amount of [trigger warning] rape throughout the book. I will not be continuing to follow these characters and their story.
