started this on christmas eve!! best night tbh
everyone was saying this book would be dark and creepy and so i was hoping it would give off similar vibes as "she sucks" by i monster. however, although it was dark, content wise, it never actually created the spooky, eerie atmosphere that should have gone hand in hand with what's regarded as a horror. yes there were moments where i had to physically close the book and let the disgust and shock pass before i could continue but overall i was never really "scared"? the gore and rape and torture were all laid out so casually?? with that writing?? that they never felt disturbing.
the ending was another let down. alice's remembering everything and her encounter with both the rabbit & jabberwock were so underwhelming i wanted to throw the book across the room because the build-up had been extremely intense
anyway!! i didn't give this 5 stars for no reason!!! i was immediately captivated from the first page which led to my giggling kicking my feet as i had 300 more pages to consume and sate my hunger for a good book. and boy was i not disappointed it's been a long time since i struggled to put a book down i even risked my life reading this on a motorcycle lol. hatcher and alice were also CHEFS KISS my inside squirmed every time he looked at her LIKE. i might be biased tho as i realized i have a deep deep obsession with alice in the wonderland.
all in all, this was an exciting read that kinda got me out of my slump and i'm happy i ended the year with this. content wise, it was twisted and sick. feeling wise, it was like reading a YA-ish adventurous fantasy. what's better for new year!!

Spoiler
(i must admit the scene of hatcher's past where it was mentioned how 5 men used hattie until she "expired" was TRAUMATIZING. it was only 3? 4? lines but the use of the word "expired" still haunts me)the ending was another let down. alice's remembering everything and her encounter with both the rabbit & jabberwock were so underwhelming i wanted to throw the book across the room because the build-up had been extremely intense

“Do not go seeking the Rabbit, else you wish for more death and madness”
I was at complete unease while reading this entire Alice and Wonderland retelling/extension. It was entirely disturbing and I found myself wanting to close the book and never pick it up again while simultaneously turning the pages on multiple occasions.
Listen, this is NOT a book for everyone. Heavy heavy heavy trigger warning for rape and sexual assault, as well as institutionalization. Alice in Wonderland is a fairytale that leaves so much room to not be child-friendly and this majorly leans into that. If you pick this book up, please do so very carefully.
3.5/5 stars (rounding down because the ending was so meh in comparison to the nature of the rest of the book and the short length left space for the want to see further character development)

Not quite what I had expected it to be, I assumed this was a horror retelling of Alice in Wonderland, however the plot had some mentions and themes of this, but for the most part was completely different from the original source materials. You can tell it has aspects of Alice in Wonderland, most notably the character names, vague likeness in descriptions and traits, but it just wasn’t quite what I had expected it to be.
but still was quite well written and the horror aspects of the book were quite intense. Some heavy themes that can be quite jarring or triggering.
I still found myself engaged in the book and needing to know more and finish the story, despite it being different than I had expected. It’s still a good story, the plot is intense and captivating, the themes are heavy and dark, and the story is chilling throughout.
I loved the subtle relationship building of Hatcher and Alice, how protective and possessive he was of her throughout the entire book and how by the end Alice was just as protective and possessive of him too.

I’m actually disappointed. I’m trying to give this author a chance, because I love twisted tales. But I haven’t had a good time with anything yet. I’m not reading the rest of the series.
Basically, Alice is a crazy murderer. She escapes a prison hospital with another crazy murderer, Hatcher. They both have gaps in their memory. On the way to kill the Jabberwocky, they meet Cheshire and kill a bunch of bad people.
The story felt so basic. I wasn’t surprised by anything. The concept of the Walrus is absolutely repulsive, and I could’ve done without it. The end was such a cop out. I mean a wish, really? That’s it?

It was really good but really anticlimactic too. The villains were built up as if they were some super evil unstoppable monsters but just turned out to be evil wizards, and one of them didn’t even do anything bad once she found him again. Alice and Hatcher were cute though.
Literally would have been five stars had not every female character been a rape victim
was it a great retelling? no...
was it an amazing horrorish fantasy? yes, definitely!
