This book was one of the nominees for the Goodreads Choice Awards 2015 for Best Horror. It actually got the 2nd highest amount of votes in the category. Rather than the typical horror story, it probably should be labeled as "horror" for the atrocities and brutality women endure in this make-believe land that Henry has created. While I do appreciate the interesting twists and different spin on the Alice in Wonderland tale, it was hard to read a book where women were mere objects and rape/torture was commonplace. It surprises me that the author is a woman. (I can not imagine how she came up with this story line.) If you took out the brutality towards women, it was a decent book. I am debating on reading the 2nd book because it looks like all the villains are female (which might remove from the plot some of the violence towards women).

I really enjoyed this book!! it was so so imaginative, super visually compelling and just idk?? i loved the ending also! it was the first proper novel i read in english and the wiritng style seemed kind of simple? i didn't expect it to read like that, but i don't mean to say that it wasn't enjoyable, because it was. there were grim moments, in general this book is sorta dark, sometimes it seemed over the top or unjustified? for example i don't know really in the end why the Jabberwocky killed normal citizens, was he hungry? also there was a huge emphasis on "evil men" or "men in power" and they were just getting slaughtered right and left, which is good, but sometimes it felt like people just were evil because they were evil. i am able to overlook that thoigh, because the rest i enjoyed and Alice's change from the traumatised girl who didn't wish to ever be free to a powerful woman realizing her strength was so satisfying and actually in that regard, the book is pretty wholesome, if only there was less sexual violence
