So dead dove but I kinda loved it. I know that some people believe that the violence, gore, and overall ick was too much especially for an Alice retelling, but considering the history of the story I found that the themes were excellently executed.

I do believe some of the villains were a bit too hyped up (the Walrus) and I wish they could've been a bigger threat because it felt almost like by the end of the book there was a little bit of chickening out of the gore that was heavy in the first half.

I think the book struggled to commit fully to the horror element of the story, but I think Alice's progression was very well done, and her relationship with Hatcher (the Mad Hatter) was compelling where I understood the motivations, but didn't feel forced to support the relationship. I also didn't find it as gross as many other people. Much of it felt like a trauma bond, and I found that the romance was not as heavy as in other "dark romance" stories.

4.5 stars, I wanted to be traumatized a bit more please

A very different take on Alice in Wonderland and one that I thoroughly enjoyed! It's dark, gritty, and imaginative from beginning to end. While the author uses character names from Carroll's [b:Alice's Adventures in Wonderland|6308590|Alice's Adventures in Wonderland|Lewis Carroll|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1347473716s/6308590.jpg|2933712], the story itself bares little resemblance to its inspiration. If you like your Alice stories to be similar to the original, or whimsical and happy, this is not the story for you. That being said, I loved it and am looking forward to the sequel.
