It was okay. I was enjoying it at the beginning; the premise is interesting enough - dark retellings often have promise (although... Isn't regular Alice in Wonderland quite dark, already?).

By the middle, end, I realized it was just a lazy book. The author piggy backed off a story that already existed and still couldn't manage to create something really compelling. Every situation was easily managed, and despite the dark bits it never felt like Alice was in a bit of danger. The final confrontation with the Jabberwocky, very built up, was the worst bit since Alice realized all she had to do to use her magic powers was make wishes _out loud_. So she wished a few things and the story was a wrap (besides the setup for a sequel).

One wonders why she didn't then wish that she knew exactly where Jenny was, or wish to be teleported to her... All too easy, eh?

I personally loved this book

Felt very anti-climactic, but I guess the entire point of the book was to deviate from your expectations and knowledge from the original story.

-felt like the villains were defeted too easily like the main villain was killed by a random girl strangling him very anticlimactic
-kinda repetitive formula of going to fins the villian, befriending someone then defeating the villian
-lots of dialogue exposition (feels a bit lazy and heavy handed)
-alice and hatcher relationship is a no from me, there's no explanation of her feelings for him and it just feels icky given the original Alice's age
-soooo much rape, prostitution and dark themes that feel like they are only there for shock value and to give the book a 'dark' feel
-written like a ya book but the themes are definitely not ya friendly

very good reimagining, took me way too long to get a name pun which I'm still mad about.
He's called hatcher. Because. He's like the mad hatcher. hatter. Had to read book 2 to get this. I may be stupid.
The prose is quick and simple to read, though some of the simplicity starts getting repetitive near towards the end. Overall, Alice and Hatcher are brilliant to read together and their relationship is absolutely endearing beyond  measure. I adore them both, Hatcher especially in his trying moments and Alice in her moments of cunning. Great cast all around. Chesire was particularly fun, his layered and obfuscated nature making him one big question mark to keep tugging on. Even the smaller characters we meet briefly are memorable, like
the mermaid and butterfly.
Some of the thematic elements such as disempowerment, death, exploitation, and such, also get slightly repetitive near towards the end but this book is bleak and I get the inclination towards it, as much as I'd have liked it done a tad differently.
