A lot darker than expected. I would have preferred the protagonist had been aged up a bit, if Meyer wasn't going to be more direct that their age was an intended part of the selection (grooming), but it makes sense in hindsight--and allows for the naivety of actions and style of narration.

It adds a lot of context as to how the main cast deal with/find out key information, but without having read the main series, the ending would probably be less unfulfilling and more confusing.
